Today, I would like to share with you a short document I worked on with ChatGPT to provide a guide which is adapted and uses Humanitarian sector examples. The guide is adressed to humanitarian job seekers who are not yet very familiar with using AI in their job search and who are applying massively. Keep in mind that AI will not replace you or your brain.. ( not yet at least) ! *Small rant incoming!* I find it a bit ironic that employers post on LinkedIn complaining that programs like ChatGPT are "taking the personal element" out of job applications when candidates use it to help summarize their experience or write their cover letter. Not only are job seekers in this market facing monumental challenges when it comes to getting noticed, but the sheer number of applications it takes to get to your yes necessitates utilizing those programs to more quickly apply. Couple this with the fact that most companies are sending generic type form rejection letters, and asking generic questions on applications, and I think it's pretty clear that applicants are not the only ones "taking the personal element" out of the process. Employers when you come across an application where someone utilized ChatGPT to help formulate their cover letter or organize their thoughts, consider it ingenuity and a true understanding of the emerging technologies of our day. To tell your he truth, in some industries I would expect folks to be able to use those tools regularly. Am I completely off base? I review dozens of CVs every day. Here are common mistakes people make when applying for a tech job. - Applying "cold". We get roughly 50 new job applications every day. I miss most of them. Even when I read them, I spend only a few seconds on each. Applying through a company team member or an hiring manager's friend will increase your chances significantly of getting a first interview. - Spraying and praying. You should apply only to jobs that fit your skills and interests, and focus on them. 90% of the applications we get are from people who definitely didn't read the JD. They are applying to 100s of jobs and pray something will catch. - Not writing a cover letter or writing a bad cover letter. A cover letter should be 1-2 paragraphs that show why you are a good fit. It has to stand out, be casual, and not over-flattering. Some cover letters I get are not even in English or have been "personalized" by ChatGPT. No, there's nothing "personal" about AI-generated text.

If you’re gonna use ChatGPT to answer simple job interview questions, don’t copy and paste the part that says “ChatGPT” before ChatGPT’s response. 😂😂 Posted a job (graduate student research assistant) last week, got over 30 applicants so closed the applications today, then emailed all applicants a brief questionnaire with targeted non-rocket-science questions so I can narrow down the candidates. While I’m looking at the answers, one candidate has the word “ChatGPT” in front of 4 of their 5 responses. This looks like this candidate put my 1-sentence question into ChatGPT then copied and pasted the response including when it says “ChatGPT” before the response. 😩😂 I’m not against ChatGPT, but if you (as a graduate student) can’t figure out how the role aligns with your professional goals and personal interests…🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
