Why should you upskill retail store staff before diving headfirst into a ship from store initiative? Imagine a customer walking into your store, picking up a shirt, and asking your store associates to ship a different size of the same shirt to their home. If you are in the early stages of your omnichannel journey, your store staff might: 1. Have no idea if the product is in stock or how to use the POS system to check. 2. Need to go to the all-too-familiar "backroom" to see if it’s available. Worse still, your staff may know how to use the tools, but be unable to in the moment due to a limited number of devices. Because it took so long to get an answer, the customer – along with 10 other customers in line – couldn't bother to wait anymore and left the store. Customers don't care about what went wrong. They simply want their product. So to save sales, retailers need to invest in upskilling their store staff and equipping them with all the digital tools they need. How can you save the sale for out of stock products? If a customer enters a physical store to make a purchase and their preferred product is out of stock, it results in a poor shopping experience. In this scenario, the store associate should be able to provide the customer with options for order fulfillment: - Delivering the order to their doorstep - Providing other pick-up store options But store associates can't place pick-up orders for customers without unified inventory visibility across all stores and warehouses.
