Corpsumer Director & Strategy Lead with 17 Years of Experience in building FMCG businesses and brands - available from January 2025
This is yet another example of why I LOVE Marks and Spencer. It's constantly innovating, collaborating and moving forward to do business better for its customers, its team and the environment. This partnership with Bella Freud builds on the legacy of M&S x Holly, keeping things fresh and exciting for shoppers. Designer-level style at affordable high-street prices. And it's not just the clothes: 🌱 I'm a long-term vegetarian and its plant-based range is unmatched in great taste levels by any other retailer. ☕️ Its cafe has become a go-to for coffee breaks away from my desk (the spuds are great, too). 👓 Now, all of this drove me to try M&S Opticians for the first time. Two new pairs of specs later and I'm converted (the second pair is half price). The halo effect is real. M&S has become a one-stop shop for quality, style and convenience. A special shoutout to the M&S Market St team in Manchester, too! The point of this post is to say never stand still. Listen to customers. Identify trends. Innovate, adapt and drive change. This is the way. #M&S #brands #storytelling #collaborations #PR #brandplanning #strategy

While Burberry is going through all those shenanigans directly related to Mr. Lee's ego, ERDEM has released its collaboration with Barbour, and it looks great (please see below). If you are in the market for a new spring coat, the new trend is lovely: colorful and cozy quilted outerwear. This collection spearheaded great interest in the fabric. Currently, with Bionce's cowboy direction, what do we do first? Right, revisiting Ralph Lauren, and voilà—one of the nicest quilted jackets/coats is there. The direction was picked up on the FW24 runway by many. Specifically, this is the work of the design duo Luke and Lucy Mayer, who showed one of the strongest collections of the season. The new Jil Sander line largely consisted of quilted “bedspreads” of satin and velvety texture, from which the designers sewed jackets, coats with voluminous sleeves, which are more often found on dresses than on outerwear, as well as cocoon capes. The designers managed to imitate quilting even on fur. Explaining their obsession with texture, the Mayers said they wanted to give us "comfort in times of crisis" and create an "enveloping feeling" for us. Quilted like a baby blanket, the fabric is perfect for these purposes. The trend was visible in more than one collection. Susan Fang, Todd Snyder, and a few others showed it. It was suggested to wear quilted fabric on the catwalk in a few ways, including as a middle layer, under a coat. This technique will come in handy now, while only the calendar speaks of the coming spring. But in general, over the few years that quilted outerwear has remained a fashionable top, there are no more secrets on what to do with it: it goes well with literally everything. Quilted fabrics (in my opinion) are underappreciated; they have an image of "old women'' brands and "old women'' wear—usually purchased at a street fair. In reality, it is a great way to incorporate prints, to make a coat light, and relatively inexpensive fabric would let you do a lot in terms of styling the garment. It can be super casual or dressy, or you need to make prints more interesting (placement prints, minimal prints, embroidery, etc). #wwd #bof #fashion #fashiondesign #design

The SS25 runway month has kicked off in New York, and there have been no monumental disappointments so far. However , Alaïa presentation stands out as a focal point of this fabulous event. In 1982, Azzedine Alaïa debuted his ready-to-wear collection in New York, quickly receiving orders and funding for further brand development. "I thought it was really beautiful to bring the essence of American fashion, which is a sense of lightness, into the collection," Pieter Mulier told Vogue. It’s difficult to discuss the Alaïa collection without reflecting on Mr. Alaïa's craft (a term that perfectly describes his work). He famously avoided traditional fashion weeks, seasonal collections, and the pressure for "commercial pieces" and markdowns. Alaïa’s approach to women’s fashion and their bodies was purely technical, focusing on structural design and creating the best silhouettes that, in his view, women should wear. Objectively speaking, trying to combine the sporty relaxation that Mulier introduced with the iconic structure of Alaïa is no easy task. Some might argue that change is inevitable after a designer departs, but the memory of Alaïa's distinct vision is still very strong. His designs were conceptually specific, and his approach to fashion remained fiercely independent, even after the brand was acquired by Richemont. That said, Mulier is a talented designer, and the collection he showcased in New York stands strong on its own. He challenges himself by not using zippers or buttons in this collection (similar to his previous collection, which was crafted entirely from merino wool). While I’m not sure these design exercises add much to the fashion landscape or his clothes, he knows what he’s doing. Aside from oversized coats inspired by the Guggenheim Museum (looks 12, 14) and architecturally built dresses (looks 43, 44, 45—reminiscent of designs we saw from Valentino a few years ago, though they don’t flatter real women as much as they do celebrities on the red carpet), the collection conveys two main messages: full, short skirts (a silhouette Alaïa favored, often in cotton or knits) and harem pants paired with tiny tops. In an era when women are increasingly disengaged with high fashion RTW, and even brands like Zara are turning to TikTok for inspiration, there’s a desperate need for designers to make a runway-to-street transition. In Alaïa’s 2025 collection, we have a winner. Given how hot summers have become, those pants will certainly be seen on more than just Zendaya—I’m sure of it. Fashion month has just started, and we already have our first wearable trend.

When "tailored" is the theme, spine-sewing is a must! Tailored creative was the theme of a portfolio booklet highlighting luxury and fashion design experience. A needle-and-thread icon was used throughout. It simply had to be spine-sewn with black thread! #spinesewn #fashion #fashionprinting #highimpactprint #freshcolor

Last month, JAB, the investment vehicle of Germany’s billionaire Reimann family, sold the 173-year-old Swiss brand Bally to the US-based investment firm Regent, whose portfolio includes Club Monaco, Escada, and La Senza. I wrote a post about it, and someone with knowledge of Bally's finances commented on the very challenging situation the brand is facing. It breaks my heart. The success that luxury companies like LVMH and Kering have experienced over the last five years has led to their domination of the high-end market. To compete with them, "rebranding" has become a key part of many brands' narratives. This process existed before, but now we see a stronger push that includes new designers, new stylists, new aesthetic directions (like Ferragamo), and even things that are hard to put into words (as seen in the latest Loro Piana show). Many brands attempt this, but none look as organic as Bally. Everything Bally does, from editorials to show styling (Charlotte Collette), feels intelligent, rooted in heritage, non-invasive, and cohesive. No other brand, in my opinion, can be described this way. And it’s led by Simone Bellotti, who debuted in Spring/Summer 2024 and has since shown the best RTW collections I’ve seen lately. His work with leather—the DNA of the brand—is a perfect example of how to treat leather, create patterns, and most importantly, craft dresses that don’t just look like two panels of fabric sewn together. He reimagines familiar silhouettes, like the short "car coat" or leather blazer, in a way that feels beautiful, fashionable, and modern. Simone Bellotti's new collection for Bally is called Counterpoint 3, and it indeed features two distinct lines that complement each other. One consists of dark leather items, while the other uses bright and light fabrics. A few thoughts on the runway show: Looks 31 and 32 (men's): These two looks may seem boring at first glance, but if you look closer, behind the lapel of the unbuttoned jacket, you’ll find a zipped vest with taped seams underneath—a nod to the outdoors. In workwear stores, such vests usually have mesh inserts, so it’s no coincidence that it’s worn over a mesh top. Guess who mixed the outdoors with the classics at this show? Correct: Charlotte Collette. Coats: Look 4: If you need a new coat, this is the one to go for. Look 8: For those who love oversized fits. Look 49: A perfect choice for a more feminine fit. Each of these items is impeccably crafted, an essential quality for outerwear. Look 14: If you’re into the upcoming vest trend and want a leather version—voilà! And the shoes… (the brand’s DNA) — please see the images below. Let’s not forget the now-signature blue cotton shirts, which many guests at the runway show wore. I truly hope we continue to see more of what we’ve seen over the past year. Bally is just... perfect. I'll comment on the bags next time, as I’ve run out of space! Bally WWD Vogue Business
