The #Kansas legislature passed a bill Wednesday that would classify organized retail crime (#ORC) a felony offense, joining nine other states that have passed similar laws in the last year. The state’s upper chamber passed the Substitute House Bill 2144, which would split the felony charges into two tiers. A theft of merchandise valued at more than $3,000 would be classified a felony and those convicted would face between 31 and 136 months behind bars. If the amount stolen exceeds $15,000, the sentence range is between 38 and 172 months. #Proactive #Collaboration #LawEnforcement #Police #AssetProtection #LossPrevention #ORCInvestigators #OrganizedRetailCrime

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — In the ongoing battle against organized retail crime, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) is tackling the problem head-on with its latest task force. CSPD’s Organized Retail Crime Unit has had a successful first year, but officers say more work must be done. “We need better statutes that can help us because the simple shoplift is not doing it,” Sgt. Tedeschi #CSPD said. Something Browne with Home Depot echoes. “We have over a dozen attorney generals who have decided to place organized retail crime task force in their state, and these are the states where we see the most success between private and public partnerships in our ability to combat some of these events,” Browne explained. “Next up, is the federal government. At a federal level having some sort of organized retail crime task force and laws that support it properly, to address these crimes on a large scale. This is not petty shoplifting inside of stores, these are major criminal organizations with ties to multiple other criminal activities outside of just retail losses." Don't lose hope retailers, please report every theft! Sergeant Christian Denning says: "I have heard it said that police don't deal with shop thefts of less than £200 so there's no point in reporting them. That is categorically untrue. "We take every shoplifting report seriously and always look to secure charges where we have the evidence to do so. Often this will be CCTV footage and witness statements provided by the retailers themselves. "In many cases, individual offences may involve less than £200 of goods but, frequently, offenders commit multiple thefts and the totals soon add up, making a huge difference to a retailers' bottom line. And it doesn't stop there, because a business will need to recover those costs, often by increasing prices." #Purchek locks thieves' trolleys and can provide timestamps & video footage of the event happening. Cameras can be set up to record the pushout events +/- 15 seconds of the event happening. Retailers often praise our systems' for highlighting repeat offenders, leading to stronger legal cases👮♂️👮♀️ https://lnkd.in/eKqEmaTk #GatekeeperSystems #RetailTheft #Prosecution #Purchek

Sergeant Christian Denning, of our #BusinessCrime Team, says: “Shoplifting is not a victimless crime. It affects a store’s bottom line and may cause them to increase prices for customers, while offenders can also be violent and abusive to staff and customers. “We encourage retailers to report shop theft, assaults on staff and anti-social behaviour to us and provide us with CCTV footage and witness statements. “This evidence is vital to help us to build strong cases. Where it is provided, offenders often have no choice but to admit their crimes in court. “And the information provided also helps us to identify emerging crime trends and to adapt and target our crime prevention tactics. “No-one should be afraid to go to work and we want to make our high streets, corner shops and retail parks safer places for everyone to work in and visit.” In the past 12 months, officers have made 1,358 arrests for shop theft offences in #Essex, secured 2,443 charges and solved 593 more offences than in the previous year. Our specialist business crime officers work with business organisations, such as Essex Chambers of Commerce, store chains, such as East of England Co-op, and independent retailers. Their #CrimePrevention activity runs alongside the work of our local and community policing teams who make the majority of shoplifting arrests. Local knowledge means that many persistent offenders are arrested when they are spotted by an officer in the street. Christian says: “Where we have the evidence, we will seek to prosecute, whatever the value of the theft. Small thefts do add up into sums which businesses cannot afford to lose. “But we also want to divert people from offending and that’s where banning orders and treatment requirements come into play. It’s giving people a chance to change their behaviour and alter the course of their lives.” #ProtectingAndServingEssex #SaBAWeek #nbcc

Throughout the years of my experience in the field ORC had always beeen an issue in the Florida Market. Do you see an incline or decline in ORC ? What are we doing to have a better control of it ?
MIAMI, Fla. (CBS12) — Five people from Miami-Dade were arrested for their involvement in a large-scale organized retail theft fraud scheme that spanned across #Florida. FDLE Miami agents began reviewing the criminal complaint provided by the victim company’s Organized Retail Crime Investigator. The complaint alleged that the scheme resulted in thousands of dollars in losses, roughly $50,000. “This criminal group committed more than 53 thefts in 13 Florida counties, stealing thousands worth of merchandise in a fraudulent systematic scheme. In Florida, we go after organized retail thieves, and now this nefarious group, thanks to the work of our law enforcement partners, will be held accountable for their crimes.," Attorney General Ashley Moody said. California’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force (ORCTF) is on track to surpass its total enforcement metrics from 2023 following heightened property crime arrests and stolen merchandise recoveries in August. Governor Gavin Newsom last week announced that the ORCTF, led by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), facilitated 171 arrests and reclaimed 26,415 items worth about $547,000 from thieves. Last month saw the task force’s total number of annual investigations grow to 573, surpassing the number seen throughout the whole of 2023. “Month after month, the CHP’s tireless efforts to crack down on organized crime continue to yield results,” Newsom said in a statement. “The state has no plans on letting up soon, and will continue its progress in protecting California’s businesses and communities while holding criminals to account.” #california #orctf #organizedretailcrime #retailtheft #retail #gavinnewsom #legislation #prop47 #prop36

Because of stepped-up enforcement, retail theft arrests in the city have nearly tripled in 2024 — already exceeding the total in 2022 and 2021 combined, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. We applaud Mayor Parker, Philadelphia Police Department, and District Attorney Larry Krasner for this tougher stance. We cannot afford to embolden thieves while people live in fear. Together, we can make Philadelphia a safer, more attractive place to do business. 2moPretty sloppy surveillance by the Company to allow this to go on. For 5 years and $2 million later …. Do you really think the former employee will reimburse the Company through restitution ? Consumers will no doubt continue to pay through higher prices .
