USA CPI for December 2023 prints at 3.4% YOY Lower gasoline and diesel prices had more of an impact than expected, while the sharp fall in global gas prices had less of an impact. The usual seasonal December weakness in Clothing & Footwear was also less pronounced this year. The table Below indicates the USA CPI breakdown expected by December 2024. Inflation is expected to reach 2.5% YOY. It also shows a very gradual glide path lower for total CPI over the course of the year, indicating that the psychological 2% is likely to remain out of reach in 2024. #usacpi #financialeducation #econimicupdate #investsensibly

December witnessed a persistent inflation trend with a 0.1% rise from November, hitting 4%. It marks the first inflation increase since February 2023. Despite the challenging landscape, there's a 6.5% reduction year-on-year to December 2023. Notably, alcohol and tobacco prices rose by 12.9%, driven by tax hikes announced in the Autumn Statement. The recreation and culture sector, along with clothing and footwear, also experienced price upticks. Cigarettes and alcohol were our undoing, up 12.9% in a year. The price rise owes an awful lot to the rise in tobacco duty, which meant tobacco prices were up 16%. #Inflation #EconomicUpdate

CPI: May 2024 The CPI clocked at 11.8% on YoY basis in May 2024, compared to 38.0% in SPLY. On a month-on-month basis decreased to -3.2%% in May 2024 compared to a decrease of 0.4% in the previous month. Over the year major price increases were observed in Healthcare (19.4%), Clothing and Footwear (18.0%) and Utilities (33.0%). India's CPI has eased to 4.75% in May'24 compared to 4.83%.‘Spices’ has shown a considerable decline in year-on-year(YOY) inflation as compared to April 2024. Among the groups, inflation corresponding to ‘Clothing & Footwear’, ‘Housing’ and ‘Miscellaneous’ has decreased since last month. Vegetables and pulses & products remains elevated at 27.33% and 17.14% respectively. October 27th, 2023 "The personal income and spending report continues to be really just all about the accompanying personal consumption expenditure price deflator; an admitted favorite price gauge of policymakers from the Federal Reserve. And given trends in consumer prices are all the rage these days, it behooves us to take a much deeper look at the underlying trends as well as any significant developments associated with this morning’s report specifically. It is with that in mind that we turn our attention once again to apparel prices. While the overall PCE price deflator reported a modest increase of 0.4 percent overall for the month of September (0.3 percent at the core level; that is prices excluding the more volatile yet inelastic food and energy components) to us it is the monthly behavior in apparel prices that hold the most insight into the future direction of consumer prices. More specifically, apparel prices dropped 0.6 percent in September, its largest one month drop since February of 2021. More than just the sheer breadth of the drop, the weakness in apparel prices comes right at a moment where the monthly change was funneling up since even before the pandemic. The monthly change in apparel prices had been recording lower highs and higher lows for the better part of the last 6 years despite a general increase in the level of inventories. However, it would appear that this month was the proverbial straw that broke the price indexes’ back as this month’s drop serves as our best indication yet that product slack is the biggest issue facing the economy right now and that the price volatility that pushed levels higher is now ready to push them lower."

As a follow-up to my post yesterday about personal consumption expenditures, the Bureau of Economic Analysis announced today that the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (or PCE for short) rose 2.7 percent in March, up from 2.5 percent recorded in February and January, and 2.6 percent in December 2023. As the media often reports, the Federal Reserve likes to use the PCE index to assess inflation rates in the U.S. economy. For sure, it's a useful measure when analyzed along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Wonkiness aside, what does a higher PCE mean for clothing sales and, in turn, sales of textiles? Inflated prices will eventually affect sales. There is a causal effect. However, clothing sales have gained some steam in recent months. We're in a waiting game to see how this plays out. In February, the US CPI-U rose 0.4 per cent, marking a YoY increase of 3.2 per cent. The energy sector saw a rise of 2.3 per cent. Excluding food and energy, the index still increased 0.4 per cent, with the apparel sector up 0.6 per cent.
