~ NRF 🇺🇸 – National Retail Federation ~ Yesterday I attended the quarterly online presentation of the NRF. Some take-outs: 📈 Retail sales is expected to increase in ’24 between 2,5% and 3,5% 📱 On-line sales are expected to grow between 7% and 9% in ‘24 🛒Walmart sources 2/3 of its products locally and have the ambition to increase this 🌎 Import: still important for products that are unique 🚢 Logistics: as usual there are many challenges (Suez, Panama Canal). I had an interesting experience in a supermarket recently. It was not Aldi, or Lidl. There was only one staffed till open, and that had a queue of 8 people, so I headed for the self serve ones. Unfortunately the queue there wasn't small, although it was moving more quickly. Not massively though, and when I got to the till it was easy to see why. Completing my transaction required 3 staff interventions, and looking around this was around typical. Basically, the wheels were falling off. That made me think about the issue of customer experience verses 'budget' supermarkets. Certaily the supermarket in question has this challenge. They have to raise their game to match Aldi and Lidl. A lot. I have said this before, and even blogged about it. Someone, somewhere in the store has sat at a meeting and said 'the customers wont mind this'. The customers were minding it a LOT the other evening. Whether you like self serve tills or not, they were not the issue here. The store had massively lost site of the importance of customer experience. #customerexperience #retail

Tesco reports Q1 growth 👏 The British supermarket retailer has reported a 3.4% increase in sales for its first quarter of 2024, taking total revenue up to £15.3bn. Growth within its 'Finest' food range was a particularly strong driver of performance, with it recently launching over 100 new own-brand products across the range. The retailer saw growth across all channels including online sales, which climbed 8.9%. Food sales were up 5% with non-food sales up 0.7%. Ken Murphy, CEO of Tesco, commented: "We’ve continued to build momentum in the business, with strong volume growth across the UK, Republic of Ireland and Central Europe supported by easing inflation." “We continue to be the cheapest full-line grocer and are the most competitive we’ve ever been, with our value, product quality and service driving better brand perception and customer satisfaction." “Our market share reflects this, growing more than at any other time in the past two years, with customers switching to us from other retailers, shopping with us more often and with more in their baskets.” #News #Retail #Grocery #Tesco #Q1 #Performance #Sales #Growth
