Should case studies be rigorously used to teach economics ? As a student majoring in economics, one gains a deep understanding of theories, complex models, and advanced analytical techniques. However, I believe that case studies could add a unique charm to the learning experience for economics students. Research shows that people comprehend concepts more effectively when taught through examples. Case studies would provide students the opportunity to engage with real-world problems, applying their analytical skills in practical scenarios. It helps students to tackle issues, recognize that multiple solutions may exist, and critically evaluate each one. Ariel’s criticism towards Economics and economists is well known, but not always fair. I remember this paper, and remember thinking that there is a big external validity issue here as there is difference between hypothetically firing people and actually firing them. Maybe economics students are more attuned to this difference than philosophy majors? I am not surprised by the LLM response. I would expect that his training cohort will be packed with economics/business papers pertaining to firing scenarios, with scarce examples of philosophy papers that handle the same situation.

One of the work highlights of my year is coming up - leading and speaking at 7 different Economics teacher CPD courses in London at the wonderful Clermont Hotel in Charing Cross with tutor2u. Over the past 15 years, a rough back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests I've supported well over 2000 Economics teachers through these events. Economics is one of the fastest growing A level subjects in the UK (and rightly so!) but suffers from the lowest recruitment rate (measured by the number of teachers enrolling on PGCE or equivalent courses as a proportion of the government target). The excess of demand over supply of economics teachers is an economics case study in itself, but I'm delighted to be able to do my bit to help plug some of the gap. 4 of the upcoming courses are specifically designed to support teachers of other subjects move confidently into teaching economics, as well as those completely new to the profession. 2 are carefully designed to help teachers of all levels of experience in supporting their students with getting the highest possible A level grade that they can, and 1 is targeted at those teachers who are looking to become, or who have recently become, the head of a business/economics department.
