Ever wondered if a shoe could actually help save the planet? Well, Eric Liedtke made us question just that with his groundbreaking work. After making waves at adidas, Eric boldly stepped into the world of sustainability by founding UNLESS Collective. His mission? To prove that fashion doesn't have to harm the planet. Enter the Degenerate shoe, the brainchild of his passion project. Teaming up with Luke Haverhals, a chemistry whiz and founder of Natural Fiber Welding (NFW), Eric set out to shake up the footwear industry. NFW's specialty? Using green chemistry to create innovative textiles from plants and minerals. Together, they crafted an outsole and midsole made from renewable resources like vegetable oil, minerals, and cork. Let's give credit where it's due. Eric Liedtke, alongside collaborators like Luke Haverhals, isn't just talking the talk; they're walking the walk (in sustainable shoes, no less). I really enjoyed talking with Petra Himmel for her article on the impact of golf shirts and how golf apparel can transition towards circularity. Here are 5 actionable takeaways... 👕 The most sustainable golf shirt is the one you already own. Don't buy another if you don't need to. 👕 Only take the free merchandise (shirts) if you will wear it/cherish it -otherwise refuse it. It will only end up at the back of your wardrobe not used. 👕 Swap, share, pass on kit that can still be used within your locality. A lot of good kit is disposed of even though it has many wears left in it. 👕 Sustainability is an overused word and often a marketing strategy, claims can be misleading or even untrue. Buying a 'sustainable' shirt that you don't wear e.g because it doesn't perform/you don't really like it, isn't very sustainable. 👕 Golf apparel is a growing market, it's important to consider how circular business models such as rental, resale and repair can be part of that growth.
