I am happy to share my new research in optical sciences. A new contribution for the nonlinear optical phenomena using quantum light. The Entangled Two-Photon Absorption (ETPA) promises to be a very important technique in optical analysis for many applications. This new study enquires into all the possible contributions that can emulate and generate a real ETPA signal. 😊 https://lnkd.in/e8tpZHUE

I am excited to share our recent paper entitled "Scaling Behavior of the Degree of Circular Polarization of Surface Plasmon Polariton". Bounded electromagnetic waves possess transverse optical spin for transverse-magnetic mode, which is extensively studied in surface plasmon polaritons. This allows us to study chiral light-matter interactions in nanoscale for the enantiomer detection and the spin-selective excitation of quantum emitters. Interestingly, the purity of the transverse optical spin, in other words, the degree of circular polarization of the SPP field, has not been studied yet, which is practically very important to increase the spin-selectivity of a given interaction. In our study, we uncovered a fundamental rule for engineering the degree of circular polarization of chiral evanescent field by manipulating the dispersion of surface plasmon polariton. We found that the degree of circular polarization shows power-law scalability regarding the effective refractive index of a given mode – as the effective refractive index increases, so does the degree of circular polarization. This scaling behavior is due to the relationship between the transverse and longitudinal electric field amplitudes, which aligns closely under high spatial frequency plasma oscillation. The most exciting part is the generalization of power law scalability, which is universal under changes in structure, wavelength, material, and even dimension. Through numerical simulations, we consistently observed this scaling behavior in different configurations, underscoring its robustness. Leveraging the reciprocity theorem, we extended this scalability to spin-momentum locking, revealing that directional coupling efficiency also scales and can be optimized for high effective refractive indices. This insight paves the way for designing chiral photonic platforms for enhancing light-valley interactions in WS2 multilayer, where the high spin-selectivity and high spin-momentum locking can construct frequency transduction of surface plasmon polariton in unidirectional propagation. I appreciate the strong support from my collaborators, Prof. N. Asger Mortensen at Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark and Dr. Donghyeong Kim, who conceived the idea together and discussed it thoroughly. Also, I appreciate the support from my Ph.D. advisor, Prof. Min-Kyo Seo at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and Dr. Sanghyeok Park for insightful comments and continuous support. https://lnkd.in/g3GfTywP

Huge congratulations to all the contributors to this, but in particular a massive thank you to Jonas, Isaac, Nick, Pietro, Susan and Angeles. Most of all though, thank you to Lily who has lived and breathed this incredibly challenging project. The blind test is a critical benchmarking exercise for CSP. The results this time are impressive. Disorder is a big theme this time. Moving forwards, challenges to think about: 1. making more efficient methods for CSP. 2. the experimental challenge; the methods still predict some forms that we don't necessarily observe. Can we predict the conditions to make them? Perhaps experimentalists out there might like to have a crack at this now. Looking forward to the second paper which is coming soon.
