Tarso Veloso highlights a crucial aspect of agribusiness and some tough times ahead. Soybeans are “stored energy”... for humans, animals, livestock, or engines. A big harvest will lead to a decrease in commodity prices + increasing yields and recent industry-wide investments in capacity = agribusiness companies are facing challenging times ahead. But not all agribusiness companies will feel the pain equally. Those with superior operational capability, safer plants, lower cost to maintain, better visibility into forecast and profit/loss factors = those will do better than smaller operators, who often struggle with the investments needed to compete with the larger players such as ADM, Cargill, Bunge and others. It’s a high volume, low margin business. What I’m watching out for: when profitability gets tipped upside down on assets – either in progress capital projects, or already running plants… those assets will be available for a fraction of their cost. Better fertilizer and manure management programs that are enforced are the only solution to this problem. FYI, on a separate note, it's estimated that 2/3 of GHG emitted from fertilizer use is from the application of synthetic fertilizers and manure in the field or lagoon. Only 1/3 is from ammonia/urea production. Combined, they total 5% of global GHG emmissions. https://lnkd.in/gaXJhvCT
