We always need to challenge assumptions and established norms. Read the personal views of Timothy Bovy of Six Sentinels who tackles the criticism of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). He argues that rather than ESG being so broad as to be meaningless; it needs its breadth to capture the interlinking qualities of ESG, which is more like a Venn diagram than a set of neatly contained boxes. Using the prism of #HumanRights read his comments on the blog on our website. #ESG https://lnkd.in/gx6ErTyw

I am pleased to say that The World Financial Review has published the article that our COO, Ian Hodges, and I wrote entitled "How Human Rights Pervades ESG." In defining and communicating strategy, human rights presents a particular challenge to businesses because it is a more abstract concept that requires a clear definition in order to manage its risks, opportunities, and impacts. Both the European Union and GRI have helped in this regard by incorporating the UN’s Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP) and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct into their ESG reporting frameworks. A starting point for organisations should be mastering their content, both for formulating strategy and for preparing robust human rights due diligence guidelines. The UN’s document itself says: “These Guiding Principles should be understood as a coherent whole and should be read, individually and collectively, in terms of their objective of enhancing standards and practices with regard to business and human rights so as to achieve tangible results for affected individuals and communities, and thereby also contributing to a socially sustainable globalization.” https://lnkd.in/etfstHNs

In the ESG performance space, human rights due diligence is directly influencing the 'E'. Aligning with UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, companies identify potential human rights risks to develop comprehensive policies and mitigate impact. Thus, progressive companies are ensuring environmental issues as human rights matter, fueling the trend. European Union’s CSRD further emphasizes reporting on both fronts, helping avoid legal and regulatory risks. Let's embrace this call for transparent human rights due diligence—it can only enhance ESG performance. #ESG #CorperateResponsibility #HumanRights #SustainableBusiness.

The European Union's (EU) comprehensive @Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) introduces robust requirements for companies to disclose their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. Starting in 2024, the directive will apply to a broader range of companies, including large non-listed firms, significantly expanding the scope of ESG reporting. This move aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and comparability in corporate sustainability efforts across Europe. Companies will need to adapt their reporting practices to meet these new standards, reflecting the EU's commitment to driving sustainable business practices.
