#AsthmaAwarenessMonth Did you know that most pulmonary patients have no idea what "as needed" means? These are general statements based upon thousands of conversations with pulmonary patients. During a PFT we always ask patients if they're currently prescribed any pulmonary medications and when is the last time they used them. I do not have an exact percentage but overwhelmingly the answer is, "my doctor said to use it as needed." We know that isn't true but that's what they hear so that's what they tell us. When prescribing pulmonary medications please put more emphasis on daily frequency (bid, tid, qid) and less on the "as needed." And please try not to say, "rescue inhaler." That loosely translates to, it's what I'm supposed to use on the way to the emergency room. In general, the pulmonary patient is confused about their medication regimen. This creates a perfect storm when shortness of breath, panic and fear kick in. The most expensive nebulizer treatment your organization will pay for is only a 911 call away.

I recently heard a clinician talking about the difficulty in reducing the mental burden of care from client to client while in clinic? Essentially, how do clear your mind to you focus on Mrs. Jones after having a difficult visit with Mr. Johnson. This does not happen simply by walking out of one room and into the other. Pulmonary Services can help reduce that burden in 3 steps. 1. We start while the client is in your office by performing pulmonary diagnostics to confirm an obstructive or restrictive pulmonary disease and to what degree. This should help to reduce the clinicians burden of diagnostic uncertainty. 2. Enrolling the client in a pulmonary specific program means we can work with your current fragmented lines of pulmonary defense and get everyone pulling in the same direction or we can bring in new services and therapy providers that will work together in your clients best interest. This should help reduce the clinicians burden of pulmonary client compliance. 3. We will provide you with the information you want and need when you want it. This should help reduce the clinicians overall burden of worry about how their pulmonary clients are doing daily. These are the values and goals that I have set for our Pulmonary Diagnostics in Primary Care Program.
