#InVision is closing its design collaboration services at the end of 2024. Just a few short years ago, prototyping with InVision was considered a highly valuable skill to have on a designer's resume. For me, this is why I avoid putting too much weight on specific programs and processes and instead focus more on a designer's core skills that underpin the tools we use. I used Macromedia/Adobe Flash for years—RIP. Much of how I used it translates perfectly well across multiple apps (component libraries, anyone?), but I found myself rejected for roles because I wasn't using #Sketch. Side note: I had started using this new app called #Figma, which forums at the time were saying wasn't going to go anywhere... Our tool sets have never changed so fast. Rushing to learn every new app runs the risk of not deepening the core level of knowledge that underpins the use of these tools day to day. Crucially, this also leads to deeper levels of personal stress. None of us can have a deep knowledge and experience of everything (this is what it can feel like at times), and trying is an uphill task, against the tide and into a headwind—with a heavy backpack and a broken leg. I remember this little demon pretty well... Right around the time of Sketch being at its prime, InVision was also king. I had limited exposure to each of these, but I still managed to get roles because not everyone views what we do and don't know in black and white terms of the tools we use and processes we employ. What I'm getting at here is that tools come and go, but the experience you gain from doing the work is more important than the tools you use. Your brain is the most valuable weapon in your toolbox. Great read about the current and future position of Product Design in tech. Could not agree more. "Design workflows at most tech companies follow an incredible number of structured tasks: for each project, designers must create user personas, user stories, journey maps, wireframes, user interviews, and much more. These concepts originated in the service design industry and initially helped facilitate a very human-focused design process – which, of course, is good. However, driven by a desire from businesses to turn design into a process-heavy, measurable function, we’re filling our time with checklists instead of focusing on the very thing that makes designers relevant: our ability to propose new points of view and delight users with meaningful experiences. These core competences that were inherited from graphic design have been replaced with a poor man’s version of an anthropology major where the act of design is mostly based on averaging user opinions." https://lnkd.in/dwJhER7e

If there's a better argument to support my relentless insistence that we DO AWAY WITH DOGMA, this article is it. Not to mention my insistence that the skills that made so many graphic designers excellent at their craft (me included) are also what make them UX and Product Designers who consistently get amazing results for the users and customers they serve. We are so completely LOST in structure and processes and procedures and trying to quantify what we do (and the ridiculous "ROI of #UX) that we're only ever operating at 30% of our true capability. As if designing ANYTHING properly was a nice, ordered, structured process where the fact that we did research gives us all the answers, ensures all our bets are safe, there are no surprises and nothing ever changes. As if software — Figma, I'm looking at you — actually did anything to make anyone better at this. Or improve the quality or relevance or usefulness or value of the finished product. As if Lean, Agile, Scrum, SAFe or any such bullshit was the answer to anything. Or actually ever worked. It's why I haven't done ANY of that shit for the last 20+ years of my career. Why I won't. As designers, we have empathy and the desire to understand, and we know that working together is the key to building this amazing product. This translates into our everyday routines, conversations, and relationships with one another. We take great responsibility in building and maintaining a delightful and supportive culture, which conveniently brings me to my next point. 🤝❤️ 2. “Support” sounds like an overused word these days, but that’s a core principle I have experienced through and through.
