New York City is the greatest city in the world, some of us are led to believe. Skyscrapers, a melting pot of global talent, a bustling art and culture scene—the list goes on. But among its glories, New York's electric vehicle charging infrastructure is lagging far behind. It isn’t expanding in proportion to booming EV sales, overwhelming the existing (functional) chargers in the city, and the situation is negatively impacting the businesses of rideshare drivers who are increasingly driving EVs. A few days back, a Tesla owner took to X, the social media network formerly called Twitter, with a distress signal. “SOS, here’s a photo of what is happening at Brooklyn NYC Tesla Supercharger. Here are the developments that caught our eye: ⚡ Mercedes-Benz USA added to its weekly streak at Buc-ee's, Ltd. with another two 400kW HPC stations, this time in Temple, TX and Richmond, KY. M-B has now opened 13 locations in 7 states since unveiling its flagship hub in Sandy Springs, GA last November. 🍁 Electric Autonomy Canada added more than 6,700 charge ports in the twelve month period ending 1st March, 2024. 15% of these were DC fast charging additions, with total chargers up 33% on the previous year. 💞 Love's Travel Stops appears to be the big winner in Oklahoma's first round of #NEVI funding, scooping 8 of 13 awards based on analysis from EVAdoption. Tesla (3) and Francis Energy, LLC (2) shared the remaining sites, which should be officially announced in April. 💡 Miller Electric Company added two new charging providers to its EV Center in Jacksonville, FL, bringing the total to five. The EVIDC facility is one of the more unique charging locations in the United States, offering visitors an "unbiased platform for comprehensive testing and solution combinations." 🛣️ Electrify Canada opened three new locations and its first sites in the province of New Brunswick. Program Manager Scott Hollinshead confirmed the new eastern stations in Woodstock and Grand Falls, NB, as well as Langley in British Columbia, all of which have four stalls and solar canopies. 🍏 Fast charging arrived in the heart of Manhattan, with a new system from Gravity adding up to 500 kW to a city parking garage near Times Square. How EV drivers use DCFC compared to longer stay level 2 charging in busy cities will be fascinating to watch. 🗽 Electrify America energized what could be New York state's third NEVI-funded site, with eight stalls in North Hudson, NY coming online. The station is located immediately off I-87 and meets funding requirements. A Tesla Supercharger is also under construction here, making this a 16-stall site once construction is completed. 🌹 In California, Power Up Pasadena confirmed a new 16-stall station at the Shopper's Lane retail center. The city continues to build on its early progress in public charging hubs, with the Marengo parking location just a few blocks away also home to more than 40 chargers. News of Hertz shedding 1/3 of its EV fleet means an opportunity for many EV-curious folks! Tens of thousands of Tesla's are set to flood the market, offering consumers the chance to purchase a Tesla on the Hertz website for at least $10K less than a brand-new Model 3. Experts hope that the reasonable price tag coupled with consumer education will increase consumer confidence. This is a very interesting article examining the slowdown in EVs. The title is particularly intriguing, as I'm not sure most Americans were ever truly 'in love' with them. The most insightful comment from the article is this one: 'The bigger picture is probably that the affluent tech enthusiasts who fueled the first wave of interest in EVs already have them. The next cohort of consumers may need a combination of lower prices, better charging infrastructure, and benchmark-setting new products to make the big switch.' I feel this when I engage in any discussion on LinkedIn, which arguably skews towards affluent tech enthusiasts (at least in my circles). Even as a supporter of the technology, which I believe requires more refining, I've felt the heat with my objective views on EVs and their challenges. This passage also highlights the make-or-break proposition for the industry. EVs must be practical for consumers. The notion of being 'good for the planet' alone won't suffice for 90% of the world who have bills to pay and jobs to commute to. They have more immediate concerns than whether a charger is working. There is likely a strong market among those under 30, given their inclination towards eco-friendly solutions. However, this demographic is often financially stressed, lives in apartments, and is frankly more interested in travel and work-life balance. The way forward is Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) if we want to harness the benefits of electrification. While many will argue that it complicates the mechanics of the vehicle, the reality is that emissions savings for under 100-mile trips (where the fuel is never touched) are absolutely significant and valid. If the vehicle is reliable and costs marginally more than its ICE counterpart, that's a win in my book. In the next year, you will see many PHEV solutions being introduced, at least in the USA, as I can't speak for the rest of the world. My advice to EV advocates: let the world electrify at a sustainable pace and the end game will work itself out. No, EVs won't be the answer to every problem, but they will find their proper place in the automotive world. #automotive #ev #electrification #phev

If lack of consumer demand is starting to show, the EV industry can only blame itself. Why would consumers switch to an electric vehicle if there is zero marketing or communication about electricity as a fuel? They can’t buy an electric vehicle with confidence if they can’t trust it will work. For a century the automobile ownership experience has been about two products: vehicle and gasoline. It still baffles me that stakeholders in the EV industry continue the “build it they will come” mentality about EVs and at the same time ignore the fundamental user experience change we’re actually asking the public to do: use electricity as fuel. So long as there continues to be zero effort in effectively marketing and explaining electricity as a fuel replacement to gasoline, consumers are forced to do the homework on their own. This isn't a huge surprise. The two biggest technology transitions in automotive history -- from ICE to EV and from hardware-defined to software-defined vehicles -- are bound to have some ups and downs. For U.S. consumers, the potential costs of choosing EV over ICE are in the news almost every day and, more importantly, are wildly uncertain. Automakers' rapid shift to Tesla's charging specification is a perfect example. Early buyers embraced the possibilities; average buyers will purchase one or two vehicles this decade and don't want any surprises. Add to that the uncertainty over how easy it really is to charge a BEV on a long trip, or even what it's like to experience range anxiety. Meanwhile, the potential downsides of staying with ICE (or PHEV or hybrid) are effectively speculative and long-term. (U.S. consumers have proved mostly immune to the fear of future gas shocks for decades.) The SDV transition may be quite different. Consumers probably won't be asked to make obvious sacrifices for choosing SDVs. What SDVs will offer in terms of ADAS, connectivity, onboard information and entertainment, and alternatives to traditional ownership will largely be additive or optional to the buyer's experience -- as long as automakers pay close attention to user interface design as they develop the next generation of interiors. New software-defined features will offer immediate upsides over legacy vehicles, while potential costs around issues such as subscriptions remain long-term and speculative -- or, in the case of owner privacy, arcane to most buyers, at least for now. Neither "revolution" is going to be quick, or even a straight line. But we'll get there.

Electric vehicles (EVs) have been piling up lately. Sales have leveled off at around 9% of the new car market, and even dipped down at the start of the year. Hertz is selling off a bunch of EVs, citing low demand for them. Ford Motor Company is slashing production of the F-150 Lightning. General Motors cut its near-term investment in EVs and is now bringing back plug-in hybrids, which run on electricity and gasoline. Even Tesla, the all-electric juggernaut that has shaped the rise of EVs in the U.S., warned investors that it's in between "growth waves" and has a quieter year ahead. https://lnkd.in/ehSEnqGX
