Compliance training...ugh. Typically it's a necessary evil and is focused on protecting the company instead of bringing value to the employees. Four and a half years ago, we started redefining and rebranding our corporate compliance program. Our goal was to turn it into a true value add for our employees. Given several conversations we've had over the past few years, we knew our program was changing our employees' mindset around compliance training, however, yesterday we received unsolicited, written feedback that we achieved two of our aspirational goals. Aspirational Goal #1: Have employees take our compliance training twice (once because they have to, and once because they want to) because (1) the content was valuable and relevant enough or (2) the experience was engaging enough that they wanted to take the training again. Proof: An employee emailed me after she completed our most recent course and said that she thoroughly enjoyed the course and that she "took the course twice because I saw the value and relevance" to her job. Aspirational Goal #2: Have employees look forward to the being assigned our compliance training Proof: After sending an email announcement that our latest round of courses had been assigned, an employee responded with "🎉". It's nice to hear from the target audience that they enjoy and get value out of the training the company provides. I'll also say that compliance training should be an area of opportunity and an extension of your company, not something your employees dread. Finally, thank you to the eLearning "expert" who presented at ATD 4 years ago. You stated, "No one has ever said, 'That was a great course/experience' after taking a compliance course." My team heard you, took it personally, and took it as a direct challenge. We've had a great time proving you wrong. #WorkplaceExpectations #Spectrum

I am passionate about Compliance! Are you? Over the past two decades, I've dedicated my career to ensuring compliance in various capacities. While most days I find immense joy in being a compliance officer, I also encounter challenges in instilling the same enthusiasm in my colleagues. Many individuals fear compliance and fail to grasp how it can significantly reduce stress and anxiety in their roles. To help your team embrace compliance, consider implementing the following strategies and share your experiences with me. Education and Training: - Provide comprehensive and engaging training programs that explain the importance of compliance. Please stop having training where you read the slides! Give some true "meat" or guidance in your training! - Use real-life examples to demonstrate how compliance protects the university and its employees. 2. Positive Reinforcement: - Recognize and reward employees who exemplify compliance. - Share success stories where compliance led to positive outcomes. 3. Clear Communication: - Ensure that compliance policies are clearly communicated and easily accessible. - Use simple language and avoid legal jargon to make the policies understandable. 4. Supportive Culture: - Foster an open culture where employees feel comfortable asking questions and reporting concerns without fear of retaliation. - Encourage leaders to model compliant behavior and emphasize its importance. 5. Practical Tools and Resources: - Provide easy-to-use tools and resources that help employees comply with regulations. - Offer checklists, templates, and other aids to simplify compliance tasks. 6. Feedback Mechanisms: - Create channels for employees to provide feedback on compliance processes and suggest improvements. If you only have a paper survey distributed annually, you are missing out on the true feedback that you need to hear. - Regularly review and update compliance programs based on employee input. In my monthly meetings I have a section on every agenda devoted to them to go over departmental issues that we are not aware of. 7. Transparent Processes: - Be transparent about how compliance issues are handled and resolved. If you are up front with your employees on how things were mitigated you can reduce the gossiping at the water cooler. - Share information about investigations and outcomes, while respecting confidentiality. 8. Integration into Daily Work: - Integrate compliance into daily operations rather than treating it as a separate task. - Make compliance part of the regular workflow, so it becomes a natural aspect of the job. I recommend placing an hour on your calendar to devote to compliance related duties daily. By making compliance an integral and positive part of the workplace culture, employees are more likely to embrace it and see its value.

3 Steps to Ensure Your Employees Truly Understand what Compliance Team communicates Years ago, when I first encountered the term "compliance," I wasn't sure what it meant. I tried to find a simple explanation, but it seemed there was none. I asked friends in corporations, colleagues, and even some family members, but nobody could answer me. And as I was going to deep dive into the topic, that uncertainty scared me. As compliance officers, we live and breathe compliance, but how clear is it for other employees? Do they truly understand what compliance means and why it’s crucial? Not necessarily (and I’m sure some of you know that)! My experience clearly shows that the understanding differs. Yet, it is one of the most important aspects (if not the most important one), to make people want to be compliant. So, how to fix this? Check the 3 Steps to Bridge the Understanding Gap in Your Organization 1. Communicate Consistently and Clearly: 🎯 Simplify Language: Avoid jargon – this is a must-do! When discussing with IT support, would you like to constantly listen about e.g. bytes and algorithms? Explain compliance in plain, relatable terms. Use examples that resonate with their daily tasks. 🎯Consistent Messaging: Regularly reinforce key compliance messages through various channels—emails, meetings, and training sessions (there is a lot more you can use!). You need to build a brand, or as I say “give compliance a face” – are you ready to do that? 2. Effective Training: 🎯First and most important rule – no more long training about everything you know, this simply does not work. 🎯Opt for Microlearning: Implement short, focused training modules. Break down complex topics into manageable, bite-sized pieces. 🎯Interactive Sessions: Engage employees with scenarios and role-playing exercises that illustrate compliance principles. There are magnificent tools you could use. And templates, are the greatest support for your team. 3. Practical Examples: 🎯 Real-Life Scenarios: Use real-world examples to show the consequences of non-compliance. This makes the abstract more concrete. 🎯Storytelling: Share stories of compliance successes and failures within your industry to highlight the real impact. Don't forget that you need your efforts to be complex. It is not enough just to communicate. To be clear it is also not enough just to train. The efforts must be linked, and only together they start to work for real. In the end, communication and training are linked, and so are your reporting channels. Imagine a world without bribery and corruption. You can start building it! Your Next Step Start by simplifying your communication and training strategies today. Be consistent, be regular, be complex.
