Will you eat food from ceramic plates or drink tea from mugs glazed with polluted dust harvested from Delhi’s air? Feeling “yucky..”? That exactly what 'Smogware' wants to do to connect you with the problem of air pollution and public health crisis. Dutch artist Iris de Kievith who has created and glazed smogware with polluted dust from Delhi’s outdoor surfaces and are on display in the ongoing Second India Ceramics Triennale – ‘the Common Ground’ in Delhi, provokes and shocks. As an architect, a potter and a clean air activist, Iris saw the similarity between the components of air pollution and the glazing material that potters use. Now she is doing this in different cities around the world. It was very striking to see the difference in the colour of the dust particles from Delhi and that from the European cities – Delhi shades are lighter than the near pitch black dust from Europe. This also makes the tone of the Delhi glaze lighter. This reflects what the scientists have been saying about influence of dust, sand, ash from biomass burning in the Indo Gangetic Plains vs nearly all particles from vehicles, industry and other combustion sources in European cities. But high quantum of dust in our air also become the carrier of the toxic substances from vehicles and industry in our environment. This is such a great way to connect people with science of air pollution. Iris innovatively darkens the shade of glaze of the tableware based on the estimates of exposures over time. It was an amazing experience when at the Triennale we gathered around a table to prepare farm fresh organic salads based on curated recipes and eat that from the smogged tableware!!! It was an immediate connect with the challenge of air pollution risks. It is fascinating how an art form can communicate complex science and messages around risks. As says Anjani Khanna one of the founding members of Ceramic Triennale, this is giving voices to widely different expressions… exploring clay more deeply, showing how clay can be part of different narratives – binding it with other practices…. capturing more lived experiences……”
