Did you know that it's not Mexico's Independence Day❓ That's celebrated on September 16th.💡 However, as we celebrate, it's essential to acknowledge the commercialization of Cinco de Mayo. While it's become synonymous with margaritas 🍹 and parties, let's not forget its significance. This day holds deep cultural and historical importance for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans alike. To honour the spirit of Cinco de Mayo respectfully, let's avoid perpetuating stereotypes. Mexican culture is diverse and vibrant, extending far beyond sombreros and mustaches. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 We—a group of Western leaders—were visiting LGT and heading back to Daegu. A member of the organization was accompanying us. The Slovenian participant asked her, “I’d like to have a nice dinner. Could you recommend a restaurant?”   She replied: “I don’t live in Daegu.”   He insisted: “Well yes, but you work in Daegu. Could you recommend a good place?"   She repeated: “I don’t really live in Daegu.”   At that moment, I realized she had already given her answer—she wasn’t able to assist. She even reinforced her first response by saying, “I don’t 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 know.” Recognizing this, I discreetly intervened, understanding the unspoken message.   𝗪𝗵𝘆? This woman was “only” an employee of the organization, and her rank wasn’t high enough. Understanding this cultural context revealed that she wasn’t in a position to respond. By continuing to press her, he unknowingly caused her to lose face. Changes of personnel at Vogue China - is it a big deal, and does it tell us anything more broadly about the fashion and media industries in China? 👗 Context: Margaret Zhang was a controversial appointment to succeed Angelica Cheung at Vogue China. The youngest ever EiC for a major vogue title (27!), she was an influencer and aspiring film-maker and a left-field choice from outside of the industry. As if being the youngest person in any room AND an industry outsider wasn't hard enough - she received a mixed reception in China as a non-Chinese national (Australian) put in charge of a jewel of China's fashion media landscape. 👗 Is it a big deal? Changing editors is always a big deal, and this seems to be part of a wider centralisation of control back to Conde Nast HQ (see: Edward Enniful and the management structure changes at Vogue UK). Are Vogue learning the right lessons from Zhang's tenure, and will they capitalise on the changes she has made? 👗 What can we learn? Localisation is key to everything in China - especially for titles like Vogue. During her tenure Zhang championed Chinese female talent, and on bringing through the next generation - as well as a heavy shift to video and some audio content. This seems unlikely to change - but the need for a strong voice at the top of Vogue China to fight for localised strategies is more important than ever.
