Yesterday I found out (completely by accident) about the history of "Muzak" It is an absolutely crazy story of failed technical innovation (a Betamax style competitor to radio that was delivering music to homes and charging them via their electricity bill in the 1920s and 1930s), controversy (allegations in the 1950s that Muzak were using music to psychologically manipulate and brainwash people), various US Presidents and extraordinary innovation - not least the invention of customed playlists in the 1980s. And I just thought it was a slangy term for lift music. Really it's a story of relentless innovation, and of people with ideas and the appetite to make something happen. Those people are gold dust - some of them absolutely change the world. Think Jeff Bezos, for starters. Within companies that same personality type become catalysts, the sort of people who don't just deal with what's in front of them but change things and create. When we're hiring, we normally are looking in that grey area between technology and business. People who solve business problems and innovate with technology to drive change. So we're looking for those catalysts. Spotting them is partly a matter of behaviours and track record - but it's also a bit of an art. You know them, when you meet them. David Solomon, the CEO of Goldman Sachs, who had a famous side hustle as a DJ, has stopped DJing. Why? Seems there are 3 reasons: 1. DISTRACTION TO THE DAY JOB According to media sources, it was because “the media attention became a distraction to the day job.” The irony here is just too funny. 2. UNWANTED ATTENTION Some media sources cited criticism from Goldman’s board that their CEO’s DJing career created unwanted attention for the bank. “Yeah, totally David. Stop being normal and fun. It sends the wrong signal about our bank!” Lol 3. REPUTATIONAL RISK Some board members were uneasy about David Solomon’s decision in 2019 to perform at Tomorrowland, a Belgian music festival known for heavy drug taking. Yeah, investment bankers never take drugs… Now on to my rant. As a CEO and standup comedian who’s in the public eye for both of my careers, I find the idea of pressuring someone to give up a unique and harmless side hustle to be a joke. This is especially the case if that side hustle does not directly conflict - or interfere - with their work, which it clearly doesn’t in this case. For all of the ranting that multinational companies do about “diversity”, it appears that “life experiences” and “hobbies” rank pretty damn low on their list of considerations. Let employees have a life outside of work. Let them have fun. Let them be themselves. And let them tap into sources of happiness and inspiration that can help them recharge from - and in many cases, better engage with - their day jobs! If anyone told me to stop telling jokes because it “sent the wrong signal” or was a distraction from my day job, I’d tell them they were clueless and to take the world’s longest hike. Nearly all of my clients have seen me do my thing on stage. And instead of showing them I’m irresponsible or that I’m distracted from delivering them results, it tells them I’m human, fun to work with, and have a life. More importantly, my side hustle keeps me grounded and balanced. It helps me to reset after a stressful week, puts a smile on my face (and others), and gives me a unique skillset in a boardroom that I believe none of my competitors can replicate. Literally everyone at Quinlan & Associates has some form of side hustle, be it big or small. That’s what makes us a diverse and rounded team. Am I the only one who sees diversity through a different lens??? In all honesty, it’s amazing how spinning some records and donating the proceeds to charities combating addiction can be considered as anything but positive for the reputation of an investment bank. Just goes to show you that most investment banks have no idea how bad their reputations already are! Sad but not surprised to see corporates trying to shut people down from their life other than the job. I couldn't help but wonder, is it because companies don't want employees to have options other than working for them, and hence make employees more desperate to keep grinding at the job? 🫣 I tolerated some mean comments on my side gig doing standup earlier in my career, and I took it as normal. But not anymore. No contract is keeping me away from who I am. Period. I don't identify with any job I have anymore, and I don't recommend anyone to. The truth is, an identity bound with a prestigious title traps you more than empowering you. It strips possibilities, your unique talents, and touches from your life, making you one of the many. Even if you could stick with that identity for years without any sort of burnout or breakdown (which, by the way, is not uncommon), the most you achieve is to be a "senior corporate employee," living a predefined life. I'd be never satisfied with that vision. Because I don't live to work, I work to live. What are your thoughts about keeping hobbies and side hustles while being employed? ‘Sometimes you’re ahead. Sometimes you’re an ice cream’ 🍦 🚀 Luke Frake made a superhero-landing on the stage of #gms24 with this powerful slide. ‘We’re all running our own race’ 🏃🏼 - Luke’s a runner. His goal is being healthy and feeling good. - Usain Bolt’s also a runner. His goal was being the fastest man alive. Both run, but should Luke then compare his performance with Usain Bolt? Nah. And that’s exactly the point! I see it all the time. 👇 - ‘What’s the benchmark?’ - ‘They are more innovative’ - ‘We should run 20 tests every day’ People and companies focusing too much on the wins and performance of others, not knowing about the nuances to the stories. The defeats and hard-earned success. Just seeing the result and promoted image. ✨ And this is a big thing in experimentation as well. Which is why I found Luke’s talk so important. In experimentation you often hear about how fast-paced and test-driven companies like Booking(dot)com, AirBNB and Spotify are. Running hundreds and thousands of tests. But they did not get to that point immediately. Testing to increase performance has been built into the DNA of these frontiers in experimentation. Sure you can get inspired, and you should. Can you use the progress of others as duel for you to catch up? Even better! But don’t feel a sense of defeat if you don’t get a thousand tests running year 1.
