Discover how primary care collaboratives across England are evolving to meet the needs of their communities in our Primary Care Network’s latest report with KPMG UK (Amit Sethi and Gina Naguib-Roberts) 📝 These collaboratives bring together primary care providers, offering care closer to home and supporting integrated work with system partners. Some focus on function, while others form legal entities, like Quay Health Solutions CIC, which supports 14 GP practices and 210,000 patients in south-east London. Legal entities, such as GP federations or community interest companies (CICs), can provide sustainability, independence from integrated care boards, and agency in their own future and how they operate. Most collaboratives the network interviewed were a collective of general practice representatives and did not include a wider primary care voice. However, some include, or plan to include, pharmacy, optometry, audiology and dentistry. In Greater Manchester, a collaborative unites 22,000 staff across general practice, community pharmacy, optometry, and dentistry, fostering trust and shared goals. Greater Manchester Primary Care Provider Board brings the four disciplines together, with four sub-boards sitting beneath the primary care board and representing each discipline. Together 🤝, they enhance workforce wellbeing, communicate primary care pressures to the system, drive forward the need to improve patient outcomes in collaboration with NHS Greater Manchester, Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership and wider health and social care partners. Patient safety should be non-negotiable when it comes to healthcare. Compromising competence standards risks eroding public trust and potentially endangering patients. While workforce shortages are a real challenge, the solution should not come at the cost of quality care. Perhaps those proposing this policy change might consider leading by example? ▶️ Being the first patients treated by dentists without the usual competence checks, lying comfortably in the dentist's chair while a potentially incompetent individual hovers over them with the drill. Leadership here requires addressing shortages through ethical means that maintain excellence. It is worrying when governments seem incapable of solving healthcare access issues without jeopardising standards or confidence. Les hope further consultation yields alternative, principled approaches that both expand capacity and assure capable practitioners.
