The shorthand definition of Rewilding is the "3 C's"--conservation of Cores, Corridors, and Carnivores. The ultimate goal of rewilding efforts is to mitigate the species extinction crisis and restore healthy and sustainable ecosystem function in areas that require little or no human intervention or management. (See: The Science Behind Continental Scale Conservation) That vision is of dynamic but stable self-regulating and self-sustaining ecosystems with near pre-human levels of species diversity. John Davis observed that "Rewilding, in essence, is giving the land back to wildlife, and wildlife back to the land." https://lnkd.in/geJxPGUh

I believe that we do intertwine these two concepts at different stages of protecting species and ecosystems. What may start as preservation (as in the case of saving or reintroducing critically endangered species), can move into conservation (the reintroduced species thriving and becoming prolific and can now be, for example, hunted or fished with limits). There is crossover so often that the lines can get blurred. What are your thoughts on this?

You don't have to be out West to see a Golden Eagle in the wild 🌄 You can learn more about Golden Eagles in eastern North America and ongoing conservation efforts by joining a webinar presented by Todd Katzner at #USGS and hosted by #REWI on Jan 31, 2024 at 2 pm ET. https://lnkd.in/gb6cwEES Although Golden Eagles are one of eastern North America’s apex predators, the eastern population of this species has only recently been given the attention typical of such ecologically important taxa. Eastern golden eagles face a variety of human-related threats, including disturbance and habitat loss, energy development, poisoning by environmental contaminants, and climate change. To inform conservation and management of the species by federal, state, and local agencies, the Eastern Golden Eagle Working Group recently developed a comprehensive conservation plan. In this 30-minute REWI webinar, Dr. Todd Katzner, Research Wildlife Biologist with USGS and Coordinator of the Eastern Golden Eagle Working Group, will provide an overview of the plan, discuss the motivation for developing the plan, and answer audience questions regarding the plan and its applications. #renewableenergy #wildlife #conservation #windenergy

Nature is slowly healing': How rewilding is bringing Britain's extinct species back from the dead. The amazing powers of regeneration are evident in sites across the country, where reintroduced species restore habitats and long-lost beetles emerge from extinction. #rewilding #regeneration #habitatcreation https://lnkd.in/e2Mh3ksX

On a life’s mission to create thriving communities and landscapes | Landscape Developer & Facilitator at Commonland
Restoring and regenerating landscapes can be highly complex and multilayered but sometimes there are things you can do where you almost can't go wrong. Increasing natural hedges and borders has multiple benefits and can be planted and maintained with farmer and volunteer communities. If farmers/land owners can also receive a financial reward for maintenance as landscape stewards that makes it even more perfect. All over England there are beautiful examples of old hedge systems and apparently if you line them up they go around the world 10 times! "Hedgerows have been part of the rural fabric of Britain since the Bronze Age, marking out boundaries and keeping in cattle. They contain hundreds of different wild plants, provide shelter for nesting birds, small mammals and insects, and can capture and store large amounts of carbon." Many thanks to Governors Camp Collection for this great documentation of the recent collaring exercise of Kito from the Marsh Pride. This is a collaborative effort between Kenya Wildlife Trust through our Mara Predator Conservation Programme (MPCP), Kenya Wildlife Service KWS, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and Narok County Government. MPCP's 'Collars for Conservation' has demonstrated significant positive conservation impacts. Through the efforts of Lion Ambassadors, communities are warned about lion presence, leading to the mitigation of human-wildlife conflicts. Collar data has been crucial in identifying lion habitats outside of protected areas, allowing for targeted conservation efforts in these regions. This data also informs outreach work in hotspot areas, maximizing the effectiveness of predator conservation strategies. Watch here: https://bit.ly/3VR0wnI The research vehicle featured in the video was acquired thanks to the generous support of Sovereign Nature Initiative & Moonsama's Wildsama.

Restoring and regenerating landscapes can be highly complex and multilayered but, sometimes, it's as simple as taking one small step: building a HEDGE! Read this great post by our own Willemijn de Iongh about the power of hedgerow systems with some great examples from The Netherlands. #naturerestoration #biodiversity #regenerativeagriculture

Always exciting to see catchment-scale conservation schemes in development. From "ecosystem engineers" in the form of pigs, to partnership with farmers to keep nitrate and phosphate on their land and out of waterways. "You can see how interconnected these things are. The idea is we move beyond preserving the last of what’s left in isolated, fragmented nature reserves and into a much more ambitious vision of a joined up, bigger, better, more connected landscape and seascape, with nature recovery rather than just nature conservation.” https://lnkd.in/ePUPAGMi #rewilding #naturerecovery #waterquality

Clean Energy & Climate Action focused! Audubon- Sr Dir of Climate Strategy; 44's Dept of Energy Appointee; Colo House Maj. Ldr; CAP Climate Fellow; GWC at Colo Law; Greenpeace- Policy & Political Dir.
We've been busy!! -Sustainable Management of Public Lands: More balanced management will help restore tainted lands / waters & boost the health of 300 birds & other wildlife species. -Reining in Oil and Gas Drilling on Public Lands: In addition to moving O&G devo further from wildlife habitat & cultural resources, minimum bids/fees would be brought in line with what many states require, speculative leases with little development potential would be curbed. -Protecting Alaska: AK is home to 223M acres of pristine public lands that dozens of treasured bird species like Golden Eagles & Peregrine Falcons call home. A new DOI rule will strengthen protections for 13M acres in the National Petroleum Reserve region - an invaluable breeding ground. Supporting Migratory Birds: The Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act will help conserve more than 350 species of birds. -Protecting Coastal Communities: The bolstered Coastal Barrier Resources Act that protects undeveloped beaches, wetlands and other coastal areas will now extend its protections for communities and vulnerable bird populations further along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from coastal storms and flooding. -Preserving Desert Treasures: New legislation was introduced to designate a new Chuckwalla National Monument across 620,000 acres of wildlife habitat east of Joshua Tree National Park & and expand JT by ~18K acres. Thank you National Audubon Society
