A common practice is expecting that our patients should disclose their life to us. When really, that's a privilege that's earned through trust. Which is why it's important to continuously hone our trauma-aware understanding and practice changes as a universal standard of care. Because even with 100% screening for assault and trauma history, we'll never know everyone's full stories. And we don't need to in order to support them, advocate for their health, autonomy, and safety, and help create a safe environment for them while we get the privilege of being their nurse!
