Japan is advancing its AI sovereignty and research capabilities with the AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure 3.0 (ABCI 3.0) supercomputer, integrating thousands of NVIDIA H200 Tensor Core GPUs and NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking. Spearheaded by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and supported by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), ABCI 3.0 aims to elevate Japan’s position in AI research and development. This initiative is part of a broader $1 billion investment by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry to enhance computing resources and AI infrastructure. The new supercomputer will provide 6 AI exaflops and 410 double-precision petaflops of computing capacity, significantly improving performance and energy efficiency for AI workloads. NVIDIA’s commitment includes supporting generative AI, robotics, and quantum computing, with the ABCI 3.0 expected to be operational by the end of the year in Kashiwa, near Tokyo.
