We’re excited about the launch of the 𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 (ACEBA), an ASEAN-centric initiative of and for businesses to demonstrate and catalyse leadership and action on circular economy. ACEBA supports ASEAN businesses in the transition towards a circular economy, as foreseen in the 2021 ASEAN Circular Economy Framework. With the support of SWITCH-Asia Official, ACEBA was jointly launched by the ASEAN Business Advisory Council 2021 (ABAC) and the ASEAN CSR Network (A CN), which serves as its champion for its ASEAN Code for Responsible and Inclusive Business. The ACEBA launch event took place today in Indonesia in the framework of the SWITCH-Asia Official programme, which @GOPA Worldwide Consultants is currently implementing the Policy Support Component together with NIRAS International Consulting, funded by the European Union. This investment, made through Ficus’s flagship Ficus SEA Fund, aims to bolster KLEAN’s initiatives in container recovery and expand its AI-powered Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) network across Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Fiji. KLEAN operates advanced RVMs equipped with AI technology to incentivize recycling through reward points, promoting active participation in environmental sustainability. The machines are certified with Global Green Tag Certification, ensuring top-tier environmental standards. Abdullah Hidayat Mohamad, Managing Partner of Ficus Capital, emphasized the firm’s commitment to ESG-i principles, aligning investments with ethical and religious values. This strategic partnership supports KLEAN’s mission to enhance operational capabilities and regional presence. Spent 3 days last week in Vientiane, Laos attending the Asean Smart Cities symposium organized by the US State Dept, ASU and RIT discussing innovation, biotechnology and circularity. Insightful sharing by academia, governments, business, and civil society on the challenges of managing e-waste and building circular pathways in Asean. Shared our experience and challenges in capitalizing on the expertise available in the region in driving circularity. What was evident is the need for the Asean Framework for Circular Economy adopted in Oct 2021 to be operationalized. We need the Asean circular ecosystem set up and running in advance of Asean becoming the 4th largest economy by 2030. There has to be a efficient way to categorize used electronic material for cross border movement and recovery. Classifying used electronics with economic value as e-waste will NOT get us to a circular economy. I'm hoping to engage with regional stakeholders to accelerate progress.

The matchmaking aims to enhance the cooperation between European and Indian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and startups in the clean and green technologies sector. The intended exchange of knowledge and expertise will be instrumental in advancing the circularity of rare materials and transitioning towards carbon neutrality in both India and the EU. This initiative takes place under the India-EU Trade & Technology Council (TTC), announced by India and the European Commission in New Delhi on 25th April 2022.
