Porter's Five Forces is a model that identifies and analyzes the competitive forces that shape every industry and helps determine an industry's weaknesses and strengths.

For a strategy to succeed and endure, an organization must establish an offering that appeals to buyers, develop a business model that generates profit, and inspire individuals within or associated with the company to execute the strategy. These three propositions – the value proposition, the profit proposition, and the people proposition – are crucial for strategic success.

As humans, we tend to take the path of least resistance. When in groups or clusters, we tend to do the same thing that everyone else is doing. We conform. In many ways, this conformity keeps us safe – both physically and emotionally. It’s a risk aversion strategy. However, it’s also a strategy that limits your capacity for growth and innovation. If you – or your business – is just like everyone else, how will you possibly stand out? How will you differentiate yourself & your business from all your competitors? You can’t. And while being the outlier can feel scary, it’s often the very thing you need to take your company to the next level. So…what makes you different?

Is change the only constant? Not just that, Values are also the only constant. Everything else? Ride the wave me friend, or your business will miss it. but how do you do that? Curiosity. The opportunity to unlock the value of Synergy -Part of a Blueprint for Positive change. I recently wrote an article, Options for Change in 2024- Below- And also came across an excellent article on understanding synergies in M&A by Tawandi Makoni and the potential promise for synergies to create value, but seldom delivered? Before I go onto my main point he interestingly cites the following which reflects what I hear and see. Arriving at an agreed valuation acquisition price/deal is increasingly difficult and extends the time frame for a deal to be finalised and also end the conversations. Sellers are gaining a bigger share of the synergy value. This has consequences in deal structure and input from the seller. To justify the deal buyers are increasing synergy values, increasing acquisition premiums/cost of Costs synergies are being considered more credible than revenue synergies. Buyers are being asked to share synergy value to arrive at transaction price. The article goes on to review Operational and Financial synergies through improved efficiencies or reduced costs but what stands out in the article as an omission is the lack of importance attached to investing time in ensuring the combined team and workforce feel valued, are harnessed by an inspiring vision and purpose. With such risk attached to outcomes and the opportunity to truly create a 2 + 2 = 6 why is this overlooked?
