Just before travelling to the XPRIZE finals we talked with Kristy Deiner, one of the leaders behind our partner #ETHBiodivX. She is co-founder of SimplexDNA 🧬🌍 and an eDNA sequencing expert: ❔ Kristy, who and what is ETH BiodivX? 💡  We are an interdisciplinary team of experts in various fields such as robotics, eDNA sequencing, habitat conservation etc. We are one of six finalists at the XPRIZE Rainforest final in Brazil. The co-leads are Dr. David Dao, founder of GainForest and expert in DeFi and community engagement and Stefano Mintchev, technology lead and robotics specialist. ❔Can you describe your approach and how it is different to the other finalists? 💡 With innovative scientific research, drone and AI technology and community engagement, we are revolutionizing the way biodiversity is measured and analyzed. We have the most holistic approach due to our great team full of experts in their fields inclusive of indigenous team members from local communities-they hold the valuable insights and knowledge needed to make use of the technologies we co-developed. ❔Why is the work of ETHBiodivX so important for Biodiversity around the world? 💡 Without disturbing the fragile ecosystems, we are able to precisely measure biodiversity in complex environments such as the rainforest. 🚨 New open-source AI model for camera trap images available! 🚨 🇳🇿 New Zealand 🇳🇿 Addax Data Science has collaborated with the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) to develop a species identification model for camera trap images, capable of recognising 17 species or higher-level taxons. • caprid • cat • cow • deer • dog • hedgehog • kea • kiwi • lagomorph • mustelid • other bird • pig • possum • rodent • sealion • wallaby • weka Follow Addax Data Science to stay up-to-date for more free models to come. These projects were run by multiple organizations and took place in a diverse range of habitats, using a variety of trail camera brands and models. The model has an overall validation accuracy, precision, and recall of 98%. When tested on an out-of-sample test set, the model scored 95%, 96%, and 94%, respectively. The model was designed to expedite the monitoring of New Zealand's invasive species (deer, possum, pig, cat, rodent, and mustelid).
