Combustible pipes can cause problems. I think thats a pretty straight forward principle when it comes to fire. But how and why? And how do we approach that? How? They're combustible. They burn and slough away leaving voids to infill upon their untimely departure. How do we approach that? Intumescent material that expands to infill said void. But not all intumescents are created equal in the world of expansion. Most caulking gun grade sealants can really only tackle 3" and smaller combustible pipes. So we rely on wrap strips or collar systems for anything larger. If you walk onto a jobsite and see a 6" Sch 40 PVC roof drain with just caulking around it, you've got a bad install. I've attached a few 3M UL designs focusing on the difference between a wet good caulk only install versus a wrap strip style install for anything larger than 3" NOTE: It does make a difference in some situations if the pipe is open or closed/vented pipe runs. NOTE: When it comes to FC assemblies and wood frame construction, 4" tends to be the limit of feasibility. The bags are broken and fed into a shear vane mixer in the small bin. This one had two storage tanks - one for make-up and another for use. The auto-lube system feeds to every third pipe and injects bentonite into the annular space via valve stations.
