Productivity in the construction industry has changed significantly over the years. One of the contributing factors in recent times is the imbalance of white-collar workers to blue-collar workers in construction. More young people are enticed by the higher wages a white-collar position commands. Unfortunately gone are the days where you start on the tools and progress your way up to foreman, site supervisor, project manager, builder etc. The downside of that is a distinct skills gap or lack of fundamental building knowledge in some of our construction professionals. This has contributed to the increase in building defects. We need to do more to not only to increase apprenticeship and traineeship commencement numbers, but understand why young people aren't completing their apprenticeships too. I believe it's time to change the way we are educating our kids by delivering apprenticeships and courses that focus more on quality than duration. Major reforms in the ACT training and education space needs to happen as a matter of urgency. It has to happen not just in primary and secondary education but in the VET sector too. Young People in Construction - or the lack of them. I get to speak to lots of managers on a day-to-day basis, many of them started their careers in construction on the tools, learning and working at the same time. This is where experience is made and skills developed. But, speaking to guys on-site there look to be fewer opportunities for young people to come into the industry, part of this is down to the risk element of having young people site, and the control measures needed to protect them. This carries a cost value and a reluctance of companies to take on such responsibilities. If you speak to most people involved in the training of apprentices they will tell you the placement of learners with companies willing to take on young people and put them on a live project is a hard sell. I know there are some really excellent companies that have embraced the training of young people and I commend them for what they are doing. They are putting the money and time into supporting and addressing the lack of opportunities out there, but they are I am afraid, are in the minority. . But as I see it, construction going forward cannot rely on cheap labour coming in from overseas. We need to see real investment in the training and development of young people and offer opportunities to learn on the job, as these apprentices may one day become the leaders of tomorrow. Maybe making mandatory placements a key part of Government policies for flagship projects going forward? Happy Friday everyone.
