For many companies and organisations, the challenge of reducing their environmental footprint is already business as usual. Some organisations have already gone beyond this and are developing their carbon handprint through products, services and technologies that also reduce the environmental impacts of their customers. So far, demonstrating this development work in a reliable way has been challenging. VTT and LUT University have created a carbon handprint guideline, offering companies a transparent way to assess and communicate their positive environmental impacts. CIRT Chief Science Officer, Dr. Jenna Jambeck saw that as our use of plastic products expanded, so too would plastic in our environment. "Collecting data on plastic pollution, which was largely lacking at the time, was a key step to understanding the problem and creating solutions," says Dr. Jambeck. Enter Debris Tracker. The app, originally called Marine Debris Tracker, was developed with support by the NOAA Marine Debris Program and co-founded by Dr. Jambeck and Dr. Kyle Johnson in 2010. The key tenets that guide the Debris Tracker team: 1)    There’s power in numbers. 2) Local volunteers are the expert in their communities. 3)  Open data is key.
