Research has linked traumatic experiences with an increased likelihood of developing substance use disorders. In 1989, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, designated September as National Recovery Month. Since then, National Recovery Month has promoted evidence-based treatment programs like Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). At BCCS, we bear witness to MAT’s effectiveness. Yet, it was only with the passage of the Mainstreaming Treatment of Addiction Act of 2021 that MAT became widely accessible to individuals with opioid substance use disorder. National Recovery Month recognizes the strength, pride, and accomplishment of those in recovery and honors everyone—including our team at BCCS—who makes recovery in all its forms possible.
