One of my favorite quotes is "Wisdom is the reward of experience and should be shared". I recently penned a short article for the Future Policing Institute on the importance of harnessing the power of wisdom and mentorship in law enforcement but can be applied across the spectrum of public safety. Welcome to my deep dive conversation about the OODA cycle with Law Enforcement Trainer and Police One Columnist Duane Wolfe. Step into the world of tactical mastery with law enforcement veteran Dwayne Wolfe, where over 25 years of experience meet cutting-edge strategy. In this insightful podcast, Wolfe unpacks the OODA Cycle, originally developed by fighter pilot John Boyd, and reveals how this game-changing framework applies to modern policing—with a special focus on the often-overlooked orientation phase. Discover how Boyd’s combat strategies, from using subtle feints to expose weaknesses, to bypassing resistance and reaching objectives faster, hinge on mastering the orientation phase. Wolfe emphasizes that orientation isn’t just a step in the process; it’s the most critical element, shaping how officers observe, decide, and act. He dives deep into how culture, tradition, past experience, and even genetic heritage impact an officer’s orientation, and ultimately, their ability to respond effectively in high-stakes environments. Learn how to train officers to recognize cues and behaviors that go beyond just "keeping their head on a swivel." By focusing on enhancing observation and proprioception, Wolfe shows how building a strong orientation phase helps officers make split-second decisions instinctively. He explains why successful training goes far beyond action drills—orientation drives everything from observation to decisive action. This episode also covers how Boyd’s influence reshaped military strategy, the importance of science in firearms training, and how Wolfe continues to contribute his wisdom post-retirement while maintaining his mission to elevate law enforcement. Ready to transform the way you approach law enforcement training? Tune in now and harness the power of the OODA Cycle—starting with the all-important orientation phase—to outmaneuver, outthink, and outperform. Listen today and take your skills to the next level In February 2014, Duane Wolfe retired from his career as a Minnesota Peace Officer after more than 25 years of service . During his career, he served as a patrolman, sergeant, S.R.T., use of force and firearms instructor. He was a full-time law enforcement instructor at Alexandria Technical & Community College in Alexandria, Minnesota for 28 years. Duane has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Bemidji State University and a Masters Degree in Education from Southwest State University. Episode 4: School policing is 5% law enforcement. An officer should be an educator, mentor, and problem solver. Justin Seals is the Director of Operations at St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School, former School Resource Officer unit leader, and U.S. Military veteran. We discussed: -Justin’s career as a Navy Corpsman, Army Chaplain, patrol officer, school police officer, SRO unit supervisor, and school security director. -How school policing has changed and evolved post-Columbine, post-Sandy Hook, post-Parkland, and post-Uvalde. -Differences in safety and security at public schools compared to private schools. -Systemic gun violence, gang violence, and teens who habitually carry guns every day on campus. -Dealing with students who are armed with knives and guns in ways that doesn’t risk escalating a police intervention into a shooting on campus. -Being a role model for students, creating relationships, and being proactive in defusing conflicts. -Mentality that a successful school police officer needs to have each day is completely different from a patrol officer working on the street. https://lnkd.in/ezNkXpub

Community policing at its finest!
In the noble profession of law enforcement, we embrace a unique commitment that extends beyond the bounds of traditional work hours. As police officers, the reality of our profession is such that we are never truly off-duty. The communities we serve know who we are, where we live, and they hold an inherent expectation of our availability, regardless of circumstance. This unyielding dedication is a testament to the deep sense of responsibility we carry towards ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. It's a privilege to be part of a profession that commands such respect and trust, and it's a reminder of the significant impact we have on the lives we touch every day. As a shining example of the above noted circumstance, Constable Banadyga was recently called upon to assist with a person in medical need. The community knew who he was, what he was capable of, and that he could be depended upon despite being on a "day off". A true exemplification of community policing. Without hesitation or reservation, Cst. Banadyga was able to coordinate assistance for the person in need. As Chief of the Prince Albert Police Service, I would like to thank Mr. Gordon McLeod for his awareness of the needs of others and to Cst. Banadyga for his commitment to our profession!
