Whoosh! This reminds me of so many other powerful bodies of work and real social justice efforts in (healthcare) and medicine! If you are attending #HLTH, this is a session that you should NOT miss. AND! We all can stand to learn a little bit about the historical principles and practices that inherently add bias into the mix. So Thank you Tesiah Coleman, MSN, AGPCNP-BC, WHNP-BC, CLC!!! For years, I’ve witnessed nurse researchers and physicians raise their voices and shout the alarm about disparities and medicine related to loose ideas causing unnecessary suffering because some hold onto the belief that some cultures have different kidney filtration rates, or some infants are better at toughing it out (less interventions) in the NICU because culturally “they do better. Then there’s VBAC scoring for infants, or women/ethnicities who receive less care or attention or pain management because their muscle fibers and nerve endings are different because “enslaved people were noted as being able to run faster and jump higher…” and all sorts of nonsensical fallacies. And just a word to the wise: calling out in equities doesn’t mean that you have to feel bad about yourself or your culture or your profession, but it is your responsibility to become more aware that the system and its rules exist in a certain way. This doesn’t make anyone bad; it just means that you should spend a little bit more time understanding the nuances.
