I recently had the pleasure of joining the Royal Institute of British Architects Europe chapter's [RIBA EUROPE] working group. The committee led by Waldemar Koehler has been proactively working on the issues relevant to the industry, promoting architecture and creating networking opportunities by engaging in different activities. The "Why Belong" statement by the group outlines the key reasons why an architect - especially those based in Europe - should be invested in the RIBA Europe chapter, and how it can help cultivate richer cross-border dialogues. RIBA Europe "Why Belong" statement: Why get involved with RIBA Europe? 1. You will belong to an active new chapter at no additional cost. 2. You will participate in an extensive architectural community. 3. Our group of more than 1,300 creates new value and opportunity for you. 4. Your involvement signals engagement with international issues. 5. Chapter events are generating a new regional communication network. 6. RIBA Europe will be cooperating with the RIBA Headquarters in the UK as well as the Chapters in the Americas, the Gulf Region and Asia/Australasia and you will be able to connect with architects from those regions and participate in events and workshops across the Globe. 7. Just signed a contract with Routledge for my upcoming book “Arab Modernism(s): Experiments in Architecture, 1945-present.” Largely based on my seminar at Columbia @columbiagsapp it is motivated by a desire to engage with the fetishisation of modern architecture all throughout the world. The Arab world has not been immune from these developments and this book aims at providing a counter narrative that seeks to move beyond the unhealthy desire to valorise anything built from the 1940s onward. Chapters cover the failed experiment of Fathy’s Gourna and Cairo’s engagement with modernism; Algiers post colonial legacies; the politics of exclusion in Rabat and Casablanca; urban violence and heterotopias in Beirut; marginalisation and exclusion in Kuwait; Doha’s urban palimpsests; temporality and transience in Dubai and Abu Dhabi; and lastly a Coda — a tribute to the work of my late father, deeply steeped in a German modernist sensibility and aiming to reconcile this with a rooted cultural discourse derived from the region. My guiding framework is based on the work of Andreas Huyssen “Prsent Pasts: Urban Palimpsests and the Politics of Memory.” The book should hopefully be available by Summer 2025.

Headline to start the day: a new version of The Construction Playbook is due this Summer. Adoption is still a challenge, is better resourcing or a Construction Playbook ‘lite’ the answer? Long-term investment or some quick wins? I’d say a mixture of both.

The accessible tourism market is worth $13.5 billion in Australia and represents upto 24% of the population. With figures like that, tourism operators can’t afford not to be catering for accessible visitors. But more importantly there are other benefits. Accessibile visitors who have great experiences are much more likely to repeat visit, they travel in groups with carers and family members and they also tend to travel more in off peak or shoulder seasons. Accessibile visitors also contribute to positive outcomes in staff morale, job satisfaction and of course the visitor benefits from incredible visitor experiences which can lead to word of mouth promotion. Im proud to have been part of an organisation that has won a Tourism Hall of Fame award for our accesible visitor experiences. Catering for accessible visitors doesnt have to be hard or expensive. It all starts with a decision to do something. Getaboutable run great information sessions and this webinar is a great - and free - opportunity to learn more about an essential part of strengthening your organisation and your visitor experience.
