The controversy about Ozempic and GLP-1 agonists is getting tribal. People digging in and saying the other side is wrong and stupid. Like with most things, the truth is probably in between. Detractors point out that it isn’t necessary, and discipline and better choices are what’s needed. Detractors scream that there is no such thing as a free lunch (or the opposite of a lunch). That the side effects are unknown and will lead to a crisis in a couple decades. Detractors will say that Kraft and PepsiCo are poisoning us and Novo Nordisk is profiteering with an expensive partial antidote. So what do you think? I have friends and loved ones who are on it. Not everyone can be like Mike Fata and win the battle by sheer willpower. I did take Ozempic once and lost 10 lbs to make weight for a Jiu Jitsu competition. Yes, I gained it back. My use case was a bad idea, but I didn’t care. (📸 of me 15 lbs lighter) I’m not in either “side” of the debate. We all struggle with disciplined eating, and it impacts everyone differently. I certainly don’t think we should give anyone 💩 for using a tool that can help them get healthier. But I can’t help to notice that I’m rarely hearing a very middle-of-the-road solution for biggest known problem that these tools introduce. That is, when a person loses the weight, they lose almost 30% of that weight from lean body mass. That’s not unique to these drugs. That is typical of any weight loss protocol such as cutting, dieting, fasting. Of course, this is a problem, because the science is clear that muscle loss will lead to frailty and an earlier death. But excess bodyfat is a big mortality problem, too. So take as a given that a person should/will take Ozempic. Then what? If I ever took it again, I would*: 💪 Get a dexascan before starting, and then a couple times a year. I’d want to know if I was losing a lot of muscle. It’ll cost you about $100. 💪 Lift weights. All men and women of every age should lift weights if they want to live well and live long. Strength and VO2 Max are about tied as the best predictors of our lifespan and healthspan. Not much else comes close. 💪 Eat a lot of protein. Don’t ask me how much. Do your own research. If you’re not trying, it’s probably not enough. Protein is the anabolic macronutrient. And it is satiating. 💪 What else? Maybe creatine? ——————- One doctor I spoke to said he prescribes a lot of GLP-1 agonists, but he doesn’t mention DexaScans because they aren’t covered by insurance. I know of 4 doctors who prescribed GLP-1 agonists and told patients nothing about maintaining muscle mass. This is wild to me. So I hope these thoughts from a microwave-to-erase-notebook inventor spur you to do your own research and ask questions that annoy your doctor. You must be the CEO of your own health. *I do these things today even though I’m not on GLP-1 agonists. It’s just part of longevity training.
