Epping St John's School is not only the only secondary school in Epping, it's also highly rated, with an Ofsted rating of 'Good' at its last inspection. The combination means that they are under pressure of rising pupil numbers, and not enough indoor dining space. The solution: Ideally located in a sheltered courtyard, this dining canopy at Epping St John's School for BURNT MILL ACADEMY TRUST provides very useful covered space at a fraction of the cost and time required for a traditional extension. The building on three sides actually means that side walls were not actually necessary for weather protection here - while there is still enough space to reach windows for cleaning and facade maintenance. Did you celebrate World Chocolate Day this weekend? One of our HBD properties is The Chocolate Works, formerly home to Terry’s Chocolate and the iconic Chocolate Orange? This historic building in York was a proud symbol of Terry’s confectionery success, transitioning from a simple apothecary to a world-famous chocolatier. The factory was the heart of Terry’s operations, only slowing during WWII before returning to full production in the 1950s, the decade when the beloved Chocolate Orange was introduced to the world. Unfortunately, after Kraft Foods acquired Terry’s in the 1990s, operations moved to Europe, and the factory closed in 2005. Today, HBD has transformed The Chocolate Works into a vibrant and successful neighborhood. Our efforts were supported by brilliant consultants, including planners, quantity surveyors, and specialist horologists who restored the much-loved timepiece to the city’s skyline. The Chocolate Works exemplifies HBD's collaborative approach with multiple stakeholders, creating a thriving community while preserving a piece of confectionery history. Tom W.
