With bloom behind us, apple growers are now focused on a critical practice known as thinning, essential for cultivating premium quality fruit. This process involves selectively removing some buds from a cluster, focusing energy on nurturing the 'king bloom' along with two or three lateral buds. Why do we do this? Thinning optimizes nutrient distribution and sunlight exposure. It enhances fruit size and significantly improves overall apple quality, ensuring each bite is perfectly crisp and flavorful. #Agriculture #Horticulture #AppleThinning 🌳✂️

A Study in Cover Crops | Part 2: Food for the Soil 🌱 The first rule of organic farming is that what we take from the land, we must return in equal measure. One way we achieve this is by planting carefully chosen cover crops in the wintertime. A favorite here at Frog's Leap is the fantastic faba bean. These small but mighty legumes have bacteria on their roots that fix nitrogen; a vital nutrient that the vines will use for healthy growth and water uptake. As John points out, healthy soils produce healthy vines, which in turn create vibrant wines that could only be from our corner of Rutherford. We mean it when we say we don’t make great wine, we grow it. 📷 California Wines • #FrogsLeap #ResponsibleFarming

WHY? Because we believe in real, good food and better ways of selecting, growing, harvesting, crafting and eating it. And we decided to do something about it. We think #biodiversity when we talk about heirloom and ancient wheat, we think #regenerative agriculture and ethical farmers when we talk about who grows it, we think of truly whole grain and craft milling when we talk about our flour blend, we think artisanal methods and deep tradition when we talk about extrusion, bronze dies and slow drying when talk pasta making, we think of community, flavor, pleasure, abundance, nourishment when we talk about sharing a pasta meal. There are always ways of making everything better. #realfood #foodonamission #sustainability #regenerativeagriculture #organic

While a smaller harvest than last year, the 2024–2025 California avocado season is still predicted to produce a whopping 208 million pounds. Although the majority of this year’s avocado yield — approximately 95% — will be the Hass variety, other varieties have grown increasingly popular in recent years. The GEM variety is projected to produce 5 million pounds, doubling last year’s yield. There’s also been a lot of talk about the Luna UCR avocado, whose patent is still pending, but has excited consumers and growers alike. Do you grow avocados? If so, what varieties are you growing this season? #CaliforniaAvocados #Avocados #AvocadoSeason #Agriculture #California

From the Breeder: Why are carrots orange? Root Vegetable Product Manager, Kyle Tisdale, gives the history on how human preference changed this famous vegetable into what we know and love today. Crunching on a bright orange carrot, it’s hard to imagine them any other way. But surprisingly, the orange hue we know and love is a relatively recent development. It’s a testament to the fascinating interplay between science, agriculture, and our desire for visually appealing and nutritious food. The vibrant orange color of carrots is a result of both natural selection and human preference. Click the link to read more. #fromthebreeder #growingtogether #carrots

Kimcheese on toast A comfort cheese-on-toast sorts me out on grey days or when I have an inbox full of admin! But it’s not the most balanced lunch. Kimchi cuts through the fat, seriously ups the flavour and makes me feel like I’ve had a meal. It’s great to see that others agree. Our The Cultured Collective Kimchi sales are up and the whole fermented food sector is growing. We’re working hard to introduce more people to the benefits of fermented food. What are your pick-me-up lunches? #fermentedfoods #fermentation #foodanddrink +++++ I’m Simon Day, Co-founder of The Cultured Collective and VEGBLOC.
