Role of Zinc in leguminous crops.after conducting soil in my region, zinc deficiency is 91%.it is very important micronutrient in nitrogen fixing crops, almost 80% of peasant farmers here harvest beans below average in relation to production cost due to zinc deficiency in the soil.zinc plays great role in protein synthesis, seed development and stimulation of flowering hence deficiency will results into low yield.after starting beans plantation demonstration with a farmer, the bean crop has balanced macro and micronutrients and the farmer is happy expecting good yields compared to previous years #good Agronomy support, the farmer is happy

Massive congratulations to agronomist David Short, who has recently celebrated the achievement of 40 years long service at Agrovista! Get an exclusive peek into David's journey...... How did you get into agronomy? Both my parents came from Agricultural backgrounds. My mother had 3 siblings who all farmed and my father came from the Agricultural merchanting side – so it’s always been part of my life. How has your role changed over the years? In 1983, when I joined a general agricultural merchant we were selling animal feed, seed, spray, fertilisers as well as buying grain for animal feed or flour mills. There were also 30+ spray manufactures wanting us to sell their products! Today, my role is a lot more advisory, working alongside the grower to decide what’s best for them. What does your job typically involve? Today I am really a crop consultant – helping my customers grow profitable crops. This involves helping decide which crops to grow, and which markets to sell to. I then look after the crop after sowing in all its agronomy requirements. What is the best part of your job? Flexibility. As a consultant, I am able to organise my time – I really enjoy the freedom this brings. What is the most challenging part of your job? Different seasons bring different pressures, but particularly from April through to the end of June there is a lot of juggling to respond quickly to requests and keep everyone happy! What advice would you give to someone starting in a career in agronomy? Agronomy is a strange job as you are on your own a lot of the time. So, to really thrive you need to enjoy the outside world, be good at time management, and be yourself.

Interviewer: Your certificate in agronomy, do you still have it intact? Respondent (laughing): I don't have any certificate in agronomy. Interviewer: What did you study then? Respondent: I have... I have a school certificate. Interviewer: And that's what you have now? Respondent: Yes. Interviewer: And you think that's enough to be the Governor of a state? Respondent (interjects): More than enough, more than enough. Me: Now that's what I am talking about. To make it clear, I am not against anyone acquiring an academic degree of any kind, but I don't think they have any bearing on governance, particularly in Nigeria. To make a good career in governance has absolutely nothing to do with academic qualifications because there is a high chance that such a person would be surrounded by those who have the academic qualifications to complement. It is the boldness to believe that alien ideologies and philosophies are not enough to limit an individual to pursue the goal of bringing transformation to the state that matters. Senator Nathan Achonu, in this interview, really hit the nail on the head for me. Whether such communications, however, equate to being able to deal with the complexity of managing a society that has arguably been turned on its head is another thing entirely. Regardless, in my opinion, it is a reason to vote for this man.
