One of the greatest gifts I've experienced in life is being my father's daughter. He was such a magnanimius man, taking what Life gave him and creating a delicious meal out of it. My father was an immigrant from Austria and moved to the United States in the late 60s with nothing more other than his education and his perseverance. In 1971, he was initially hired as manager of La Bodega Restaurant; he created the menu (seen below) from his own experiences. I was about 10 when he was able to buy out the investors, becoming sole-owner, then opening another location and so on. It wasn't always easy- even as a child I could sense there were some really difficult times. He prepared me for being a small business owner through daily life; complaining about the bank issues, talking about investors, etc. Never-not-once did I expect a smooth ride in life because my dad prepared me. Some quick reflections on Border Gavaskar trophy which we lost which are applicable to the corporate world 1) Smell the coffee early on - Given our performance in the series against New Zealand, it was clear that we have fundamental problems in our batting. Failure to acknowledge and accept at an early stage leads to bigger malaise. It's like ignoring a wound. There are many examples in corporate world wherein businesses failed to read signals. 2) Select not based on "star" status: Two of the biggest failures in this tour has been Rohit and Virat. It's obvious that these were selected based on their records, not actual performance. In Corporates, at times more than necessary importance is given to educational institutes or work experience. Select primarily based on delivery potential in current context. 3) Dependence factor - Bumrah: Bumrah was fantastic, but there was huge Dependence on him. This led to workload issues and eventually he could not play a role at a critical stage. Organizations tend to have high dependence on certain individuals - this can be risky. Need to have fall back plans 4) Inspired changes done by Australia- Australia retained the same team structure and the replacements were one to one role replacement (opener for opener, all rounder for all rounder, fast bowler for fast bowler). This lead to stability, whereas India looked clueless on team structure. Important for organizations to have clarity on team structure else there might be confusion leading to Sub optimal performance Like to have your comments
