With the mission to promote a culture of safety aligned with the values of military service, Home Front Secured seeks to honor the training and discipline instilled during service by addressing firearm safety through a lens of respect and understanding, while also sharing valuable support resources for service members or Veterans who may be in crisis. This past Monday, Memorial Day provided an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices military personnel have made throughout US history. Studying the evolving nature of service member deaths from the 1700s onward provides insights into how warfare and other factors have influenced soldiers’ lives and deaths. Data records show how accidental, illness-related, and suicide deaths among American soldiers have changed over time. The US military recorded 1.19 million fatalities between 1775 and 1991, including 651,031 battle deaths and 539,054 deaths outside of combat.     World War II was the deadliest conflict in both US and human history, resulting in approximately 1.08 million American deaths and injuries. That’s about 41% of US military casualties in major conflicts.   As of February 2024, the global war on terror — which began in October 2001 — has led to 7,085 military fatalities and 53,533 wounded service members.  There were 60,770 active-duty deaths from 1980 to 2022, with 50,789 from accidents, illness, and self-inflicted wounds. Accidental deaths, including those from vehicle crashes and alcohol or substance use, have fallen 83% since 1980. However, deaths from self-inflicted injuries have risen by 44.1%. They are currently the most common cause of death in the military. Today is the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, which forever changed our world and our nation. I vividly recall being a junior at Wakefield High School in weight training class when Coach Rivers walked in and turned on the television. We were shocked and horrified as the events unfolded. That day set me on a path that led to ten years of military service, including multiple combat deployments, followed by three years as a contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting special operations forces. We were part of the effort to confront the groups behind the attacks, and the battle that ensued shaped so much of my life. As I reflect on that day and its long-term consequences, I remember not only those who tragically died, but also the thousands of men and women who sought justice in the aftermath. However, in our pursuit of justice, I recognize the difficult reality that we have harmed many others along the way. This realization motivates me in my current work as a political violence expert focused on the United States and bridging the divides that threaten our nation. On this day, we remember. Not only are lives lost, but there is an indelible mark left on our collective soul. We must work together to create a future in which everyone is valued and we are no longer plagued by terrorism and violence, regardless of ideology.
