Jan 7, 2016 — The NCAA's three divisions were created in 1973 to align like-minded campuses in the areas of philosophy, competition and opportunity. People also ask What is difference between division 1 2 3? A school's size and the resources of its athletics program determines its NCAA division. To ensure fairness in competition, larger schools compete in Division 1 and Division 2, while smaller schools compete in Division 3. Division 1 and 2 schools can offer athletic scholarships, while Division 3 schools cannot.

Congrats to the campus + alumni families at the University of Michigan + University of Michigan Athletics and the University of Washington + University of Washington Intercollegiate Athletics as well as their #AnnArbor + #Detroit + #Seattle communities for an epic season of championship football. The 10th and last iteration of the current College Football Playoff format will be one to remember. This year's championship is a provocative bookend to the #CFBPlayoff. Both the first and the last iteration of the 4-team format pit two campuses from the northern half of the country against two schools from the southern half. In a repeat of 2014, this year the two north-side campuses advance to the championship, one from the Big Ten Conference and one from the Pac-12 Conference (same conferences as in 2014). Mind-blowing symmetry. 🤯 The symmetry would be cosmic or divine if an undefeated Florida State University had made the playoff this year, as they too were a semifinalist back in 2014. Regardless, #FSU's litigation with the Atlantic Coast Conference has ensured that the #CollegeSports industry will always look back on this moment as an inflection point on how it conducts business. Filling the bookends, the Southeastern Conference has been represented in all BUT two #CFBPlayoff championships...the first (2014) AND NOW the last (2023). Again...mind-blowing. This edition of championship #CollegeFootball is ready for print. https://lnkd.in/gtuGBwmD

Attorney at Kennyhertz Perry | College Sports Law Attorney | Sports Law | NIL Attorney | Business Law | Former Division I College Basketball Player
UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley likes college players being paid and sharing in the revenue they help generate. But he doesn’t like the annual free agency that currently exists in college basketball and the overall amount of player movement. His solution: contracts that commit athletes to a school for a set period of time. He sees protections in that for both schools and athletes. It ensures athletes will be paid what they’re promised (there are still amazingly some NIL collectives that don’t use contracts and some players that don’t demand them), and it provides schools with some roster certainty. Some NIL compensation agreements that schools are planning on using after the House settlement will try and address the player movement. #nameimagelikeness #ncaa #collegeathletics #sportslaw https://lnkd.in/gfgc5sSZ

Are we paying attention to what is happening to the smaller, private college sports programs? Great Forbes article by #PennGSE Professor Dr. Karen Weaver at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education as an introduction to the changing landscape of collegiate athletics. So much of the focus is on NCAA Division I programs, but that narrow view leaves out so much of the post-secondary athletic population. Playing sports in college is an honor that so few high school athletes experience. So, when the opportunity arises, how are students able to maximize their chance to continue to play? NCAA Divisions I, II, and III are certainly options, but we also have to keep NAIA and NJCAA schools in the conversation. If the research is showing that NCAA DIII schools are in jeopardy, what then is the fate of programs in the other athletic organizations? In Baltimore City schools, student-athletes comprise the largest number of graduates in the district. I work with these students every day. I only hope that they continue to have a college - NCAA DII or DIII, as well as NAIA and JUCO - to attend and live out their aspirations as students and athletes. #LinkedInsports
