The Brisbane City Council’s “Buildings that Breathe” guidelines encourage greener, more sustainable developments by steering design towards environmentally-conscious features. These include natural ventilation, extensive green landscaping throughout developments, and the integration of activated, landscaped rooftops with recreational amenities. However, the council cannot rely solely on developers to introduce green buildings. Proactive measures are needed to retrofit many of Brisbane’s bare and hot streets and council needs to pull its weight to make them more walkable during the intense summer heat which is only going to get worse with climate change. Fleet Valley Pocket Park in Camden demonstrates the potential of sustainable urban design. Once a lifeless paved space, it's now a biodiverse hub that enhances the local environment and provides much-needed greenery for the community. Delivered in collaboration with London Borough of Camden, LUC, GreenBlue, VolkerHighways and idverde UK the project overcame complex underground challenges, including main water pipes and sewers, with innovative root management and nature-based solutions. By prioritizing environmental responsibility and fostering social connections, I believe these structures are becoming integral parts of vibrant, resilient cities. As I envision the future of urban living, I see an emphasis on green architecture and community engagement guiding us toward more inclusive, healthier, and environmentally-conscious environments. To me, tall buildings can evolve beyond impressive architectural feats into vital components of a thriving urban ecosystem. Thames City is a prime example of an evolving skyscraper resi-led scheme. Designed not just for functionality, but with an integral focus on community interaction. Shared spaces such as rooftop gardens, communal lounges, and flexible work and play areas are fostering connections among residents, creating a true sense of belonging. In this future, I see tall buildings not only shaping our skylines but also nurturing our communities and protecting our planet, paving the way for a more sustainable and connected urban experience.
