We have a new season of live audio described performances across 2024-2025 at the Royal Ballet and Opera. Dates to announced soon. As part of the developing Access project the team have been exploring the incorporation of Audio Description in promotional videos. Linked to this post is a YouTube video featuring a 23 second season launch trailer with Audio Description placed over the soundtrack. This is just an initial step, as we move to more integrated processes in collaboration with our Audio Describers and artists. As someone who trained as an Audio Describer, it’s such an insightful process to explore audio description inclusion across new functions and teams. It opens rich conversations about what is useful information, what is assumed and how biases can quickly surface but also be challenged. A small movement forward, but hopefully the start of laying the foundations for long lasting Accessibility. #RoyalBalletOpera #Access #AudioDescription YouTube thumbnail ID. A dancer lifts another, small in perspective against a cosmic iris like circle that fills the backdrop of the stage. The words imagination, inspiration and experience appear, centred with the words 'audio described' placed in the top right corner. REFLECTIONS ON SCARCITY BY ANDREW GILDER As Joburg Ballet’s SCARCITY takes to the Johannesburg stage, South Africa stands on the cusp of a sixth democratic election cycle that offers a potential escape from perceived political “scarcity” and ferments (and foments) in the aftermath of a Budget Speech that cleverly leverages abundance out of actual financial “scarcity”. This pivotal juncture offers an opportunity to reconsider the role of the ballet company in our post-Apartheid country, and to reflect upon the impact and evolution of ballet across thirty years of democracy and whether the artform has anything useful to say about our current social and political lives. This reflection on SCARCITY, while heartfelt, is also limited in at least two ways: conceptually, because it is personal and confined to examining the societal and artistic role of the ballet company; and temporally, because it is a small glimpse into a dynamic artform at a particular moment in our national socio-political evolution. For over 30 years, Harlequin Floors has partnered with the Royal Ballet & Opera, providing bespoke flooring solutions for world-class productions. From the Harlequin Liberty sprung floor used on their ballet wagon to Harlequin Cascade and printed vinyl floors for productions like Dark With Excessive Bright and Like Water for Chocolate, our performance floors prioritise dancer safety and artistic excellence. Stuart Robertson, Assistant Technical Director, shared: “When the ballet dancers come onto the stage, they know the flooring is always the same sprung floor. This provides confidence for the technical teams and the dancers.” Harlequin is proud to support the Royal Ballet & Opera’s creativity and innovation across its stages, including the iconic Linbury Theatre and rehearsal spaces like the Clore Studio. We look forward to continuing our partnership into 2025 and beyond. #HarlequinFloors #RoyalBallet #OperaHouse #PerformanceFlooring #BalletSafety https://buff.ly/4h6DwZ3

After a magical performance guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner, a loving tribute to longtime supporters Dr. Leo and Patricia Whiteside, 2024 Reverence Award recipients; a triumphant fund the need paddle raise and exciting auction to close the evening. The audience was invested and enthusiastic in supporting the ballet! ... Abeles & Company provided event and fundraising strategy, as well as production services to help guide SLB as the organization introduced a new event model and pricing structure in a more intimate venue. ... The Ballet industry is evolving, with management and agents becoming increasingly prominent. This shift brings both exciting opportunities and new challenges. On the one hand, we see dancer visibility expanding into mainstream channels, leading to increased awareness and wider appeal. Dancers are commanding higher fees, which is long overdue recognition for their artistry. However, this growth in costs presents a challenge, especially within the traditional theatre setting. If ticket prices and funding from donations or sponsorships don't increase proportionally, a gap is created that threatens the sustainability of the current model. So, how do we bridge that gap? It's a question the Ballet community must address collectively. Should theatres innovate to draw more audiences? Can new revenue streams such as brand partnerships, collaborations, or even digital performances help alleviate the financial strain? As management continues to advocate for fair pay and more opportunities, we must also ensure that the infrastructure supports this new landscape to keep ballet thriving. #ballet #dance #balletmanagement #balletagent
