Dear Australia, it’s time to stand up to the standover merchants parading as our leaders - local, state, federal, government, union, arts, sport and corporate. On one hand, they spew vitriol and name calling, then plead for civility by saying “all sides need to be civil”, then lecture us and patronise us while pleading for civility, and while their attack dogs continue to name call, denigrate and spew vitriol. Enough is enough. It’s time to call out the lies, the obfuscation, the deflection, and the total lack of accountability or humility. Its time to once again be the Australia that calls a spade a spade, and have our bullsh*t detectors on high. It’s time to stop being afraid of what they might do if we stand up. But most importantly, it’s time to get out of our echo chambers and expose ourselves to the opinions that conflict with our Pollyanna views of the world. It’s time we learned how to talk about politics and religion, with civility and without breaking friendships. It’s time to learn how to disagree as we need to, only after finding the ground where we can agree first. It’s time to stop being mugged or seduced by slick, spin marketing campaigns. It’s time to be curious about what is going on and how it impacts us. Ultimately, it is time to not only know what you believe and think, but most importantly, why you think or believe it. We can do this. Go well
