Responsible for about 3% of the world's total CO2 emissions, the maritime sector's footprint rivals that of major industrialized nations. The vast majority of the world's trade—approximately 90%—is carried by sea, with massive container ships and tankers burning heavy fuel oil, one of the dirtiest fossil fuels available. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions from shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. To achieve this, the industry is exploring various innovations and strategies - cleaner fuels like LNG and hydrogen, the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, and the design of more aerodynamic ship hulls, wind-assisted propulsion and electric vessels. Despite these efforts, the path to decarbonizing shipping is fraught with challenges, such as high costs and the need for global coordination. Supporting ports like the exceptional Orkney Harbours Islands Council Authority on the Journey to Net Zero The Net Zero team at Sealand Projects Ltd have been hard at work partnering with ports to help them better understand and manage their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. One such collaboration is with the Orkney Islands Council Harbour Authority, who are striving to lead the way in sustainable practices within the ports industry. Their ambitious goals align perfectly with our expertise, and we’re delighted to support them on this journey. As part of the process, we hosted an engaging emissions workshop, bringing together team members to explore tactics and solutions for achieving their net zero objectives. With 29 diverse areas under their jurisdiction, accounting for their carbon emissions was no small feat. However, through clear communication, diligent effort from the Harbour Authority, and Sealand’s strategic approach, we ensured the process was as smooth as possible. A notable challenge in ports is understanding emissions from visiting vessels, which typically account for over 97% of total emissions. By leveraging Sealand’s specialist vessel emissions software, we were able to provide accurate calculations of GHG emissions across various vessel types and uses, making this complex task much more manageable. We extend our gratitude to the Orkney Harbours Islands Council Authority for trusting us to deliver their first GHG emissions report. The UK and Ireland are collaborating on a first-of-its-kind project: 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀 connecting their ports. This green initiative emphasizes the de-carbonization of maritime emissions which has surged up to 20% in the past decade, according to UNCTAD. Decarbonising shipping – exploring the marine industry’s technological pathways to Net-Zero. Why target Shipping? The immense impact of a single vessel compared to land transportation is astonishing. Why has it taken so long? Ships are out of sight, operating in international waters, requiring a global effort for change. An international organization must take the lead to initiate and drive this transformation. Which alternative fuels are closest to a solution? e-LNG and e-Ammonia are currently the most promising options. No solution is perfect, but the goal is to get as close as possible.
