Just 5 days ago, as I reached for my office bag, something caught my eye on the cupboard – a note, lovingly placed by my daughter. It wasn't a list of homework or a school assignment. Let’s talk about the 4 Life part of TI -DI 4 Life What it means is that we work for life to empower. We empower through finding innovative work to inspire and design further action. As when you empower a youth it doesn’t stop at 18 or some artificial cut off date. It doesn’t stop at a level of effort either. The empowerment of youth goes on for a lifetime. Even at nearly thirty the youth empowerment within me is alive. The one that still believes in kindness and better tomorrow. Being a youth is marked with dreams and goals. Dreams and goals that as we age fade or we change or worse. We say we can’t have new dreams and goals. Let’s empower the youth around us but also the youth within ourselves. As when we even remember what we were taught in kindergarten “ if you have nothing nice to say then don’t say it” then we are reminded to try todays what we have to say as compassionately as possible. Sometimes as an activist our conversations don’t sound compassionate and can be harsh. But that is part of the activist playbook. This harshness comes from passion to lead our society toward solutions and have to be firm. A lot like how when a parent lays down a rule the child thinks it’s harsh. So do a lot of the work of an activist when encouraging action. Regardless let’s empower together not just today but for life. One youth at a time. These days I think a lot about myself. My focus is about my mindset about life and my approach to it. Yes, I am seriously working on myself . This is for two reasons. I want to live a happy and fulfilled life and secondly I want to raise children who will live a happy and fulfilled life. There are versions of me I don't want my son to clock 1 and meet. My partner knows this too. This morning my reflection was about optimism. I was encouraging myself to be more optimistic in life. It is optimism that makes one look strong. Optimistic people crush mountains like biscuit bone. Optimistic people don't give up. They are madly resilient. They want to try out things. If you see people who are optimistic, they trace it to their childhood days. Some people tell you my father was a hardworker or my mother will always see the light at the end of the tunnel even before she begins the journey. Raising optimistic children should be one of your goals as a parent. Because pessimism does not give way for great things. These few points would help you to instill positive outlook and hopefully approach in your children. 1. Be an optimism model. Your children should look at you and see you approach life and situation with so much hope positivity. 2. Celebrate their efforts not only their wins. Efforts your child put in to accomplish a task is worth commending. 3. Forster the attitude of gratitude. Be and teach your children to be grateful for every little thing. This is a game changer. Such a child will never feel disadvantaged. 4. Encourage your children to think positively 5. Problem solving skills are necessary skills you need to build in them.
