Awful news: Airship Syndicate - the developer behind games such as Wayfinders: Echos, Ruined King: A League of Legends Story and Darksiders Genesis - announced they had to let go 16 individuals. This is following on from layoffs earlier in January, where 12 staff were laid off. As a #recruiter for the #gamesindustry naturally I get to speak with some amazing people, everyday, some who's work I've admirered and could have only dreamt of meeting as a younger gamer. It's in these moments I realise I could find myself working with these very people and studios at any moment and I often ask prospective candidates "What would be your ideal studio to work with", I ask this because a question I ask myself regularly too and I'm always intrigued by peoples answers. We started gamedev jobs board during 2023 layoffs. This is for everyone who got laid off from Riot Games, Activision Blizzard, Unity, Embracer Group, People Can Fly Studio, Eidos-Montréal or any other studio. We started a small community initiative where people who were let go came to hunt for their next job. We invited recruiters, HRs from 300+ studios globally to list jobs. It’s not often that I say this. I wanted to make a post like this, as it’s something that has me in shock and deep sadness as well. This week, Riot has had a big layoff of people, and today I hear that Xbox, Activision, Blizzard, and King have laid off 1,900–2000 employees. The job market is hard enough, and the landscape of the games and tech industries is so rough that it's not uncommon to hear this news. I understand what it is like to be laid off. It happened to me, and I’m still trying to find my footing and secure path, and I thought, What the hell, why not chase a dream while I’m at it? I won’t say I understand the reason behind this whole situation; at the end of the day, I'm a designer and artist who just wants to work. Like a lot of us. I wanted to say that if there was a magic wand to fix all of this, I would do it in a heartbeat. I truly do love this industry and the creativity it brings. I’ve seen this industry do incredible things. I may only be very fresh, green, and full of hope for it in the midst of a shitty situation. I know this! If there is anything I could do to help, I would. If you need an ear to listen, I am here. If you need a design done, I’m here and happy to do it for you. With all of the layoffs in the game development industry, this is quite literally the best time to start your career in game dev. Does this sound counterintuitive? When you consider that only a quarter of senior game developers (with 8+ years of experience) began their careers directly in game dev, this should give you a hint as to what I'm referring to. The vast majority of developers begin their careers in other industries; whether you're an engineer working on software of a different nature, or an animator cutting your teeth in film, getting some experience in adjacent industries how the majority of the folks you see working in game development today got their start. Well, depending on what you're looking to achieve in game development, there are several successful paths to accomplish your goal. Here is what we know has been successful in the past: 🎨 Artists have the highest number of direct hires into game dev. Being hired as an environment (hard surface) modeller was the most common occurrence of this. 🗺 Designers are also successful at direct applications; often systems design is an entry point. While there are certainly designers from other industries, level, for example, game designers are very specific to the nature of game development 📣 Producers, Development Directors, Production Coordinators...there is a clear path to success here that I can see. The empirical data supports that more than 60% of them began in QA. I've made this suggestion time and again: being hired directly into a production path is a rare occurrence... 👨🏾💻 Engineers are, for the most part (60%) begin in other industries. They hone their skills before moving to game development. This is another one that is clear to me. 📽 Animators begin their careers in predominantly 2 different paths: different industries (film, animated shorts) and as freelancers. 70% of them! So what does this mean for you? It means that you need to consider all of the advice about "breaking into the industry," and whether it is useful and effective. Where is it coming from? Are those providing advice coming from a place of experience? Or is it hyperbole? Right now is the best time for you to consider what your career path is, and how you can achieve your goal. Sony is planning to reduce its workforce by about 8%, joining other companies in the technology and gaming industry that have announced job cuts. 👎 The company will #layoff approximately 900 positions from its PlayStation division, citing industry changes as the reason. These #jobcuts will affect workers in the Americas, Japan, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia Pacific region. 🌎 This news comes a month after Microsoft announced it would lay off nearly 2,000 employees following its purchase of Activision Blizzard. Additionally, in January, Riot Games, the creator of the popular game League of Legends, shared that it would let go of 11% of its staff.
