It's no secret that people love doing business with 1) people they LIKE 2) people they TRUST and 3) people with SHARED INTERESTS. It's also no secret that we all spend way too much time sitting (or standing) at our desks staring at a screen reading emails or meeting people on Teams calls and although this is imperative to move the needle getting deals executed, I am a firm believer that business and business development thrives best with the unparalleled human connection of in person meetings so its NO SECRET that last Friday is something that needs to happen more often! Port is for Christmas, or is it? I always remember one summer at Majestic where the Muswell Hill branch welcomed a new member to the team. He had just returned from working at Taylor's Port House, where serving port in the height of summer was the norm. Guess what? He absolutely smashed sales for the store that summer breaking company records. I questioned him whilst he visited our store on a stock run. How did you manage it? Here's what he did: Had the confidence to challenge conventional thinking. Changing customer perceptions is no easy feat, but he embraced the challenge. Leveraged his unique experience and knowledge. By sharing his expertise and enthusiasm for port, he made it accessible and exciting for the customers. Created a unique customer experience. He offered tastings and shared the perfect summer pairings, transforming port from a winter drink into a summer sensation. Lesson learned: Innovation often starts with challenging the status quo. Stuff that sinks - Takeaways from Ft. Lauderdale – Slower 2024 but with Hope for 2025. Northcoast Research just sent me this quick update from Florida. In summary: Last week, senior leaders from major marine brands, including Winnebago and Brunswick Corporation, gathered at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show to assess the state of the industry as 2025 approaches. Dealers and industry experts shared mixed insights: while attendance was deemed healthy, it lagged behind previous years, with high-spending out-of-towners noticeably absent, and sales conversions were still modest. Inventory levels varied, with tow boats highlighted as an overstocked, weaker segment. Dealer sentiment about 2025 ranged from cautious to mildly optimistic, with most expecting flat to low single-digit sales growth. Winnebago-owned Chris-Craft and Barletta Boat Company, LLC showed strong market performance, with Chris Craft maintaining positive sales momentum and Barletta making strides in the competitive pontoon market. Brunswick introduced its new Navan line, drawing interest with its European-style boats, though the market remains niche in North America. Despite some destocking earlier in the year, excess inventory continues to influence cautious ordering among dealers. Retail financing rates and anticipation of rate cuts have tempered sales, with average successful retail price points falling from above $600K to around $250K. Dealers anticipate a slight sales increase in late Q2 and Q3 of 2025, while manufacturers foresee flat retail trends. Winnebago brands Chris Craft and Barletta are gaining market share, and Brunswick remains positive about its vertical integration, which allows for efficient production adjustments if retail demand rises. Innovations from Brunswick, particularly in Mercury’s 600-hp outboard motor, highlight a continued focus on new technology and consumer interest in the brand’s expanded offerings, including Sea Ray and Navan models.
