Job seekers deserve clear communication from companies posting job openings. Remote and hybrid roles are not interchangeable. It's frustrating to apply for a remote position only to discover it's actually hybrid and may require relocation. Instead, I’d appreciate if you could reach out with something like this: “Hi Nathanael, (just a quick note—please spell my name correctly; it’s Nathanael, not Nathaniel). I’ve explored your organization’s job board and have applied for the following role: [insert job title/req number]. Could you share insights about the organization, such as benefits, culture, and the hiring process?” If we don’t currently have the ideal role for you, consider reaching out with: “Hi Nathanael, I’m an experienced [insert your profession] looking for my next opportunity. I’ve reviewed your job board and noticed there aren’t any openings that align with my skills right now. Do you know of any upcoming roles that align with that field or know anyone who may have one? This is great insight from a very busy recruiter! It's super important to be very specific about a role you are interested in. If you hit the majority of the qualifications definitely express that! If you don't hit the majority of qualifications (or don't understand what the organization is asking) you can reach out and ask that as well. There are a ton of recruiters that are veterans that 100 percent want to help but they need more information! I personally understand the struggle of not understanding what a job description is actually asking for. The organization doesn't understand what we did in the military as well.... It's a difficult situation to be in! This is why it's crucially important to knock out an interest survey with your bases Military & Family Readiness Center and discover your gaps (experience/education). The sooner you discover your "why" and knock out the requirements to get there....the better off you will be! You need time (5 plus years) to use Tuition Assistance to knock out your degree/certs before separating or retiring if you're startingfrom scratch. This is easier said than done while serving as it's extremely difficult to balance work/deployments/family life/and school! All you do from there is create a master resume and find positions that match your "why". Create a targeted resume from your master resume....THEN reach out to recruiters! Something that came up in my conversation with someone last week was how remote work seems less and less accessible to folks these days. It’s a harsh reality, but the reality nonetheless. Let’s break it down. With more and more companies issuing RTO mandates, and many highly skilled professionals still unemployed months and years after being laid off, the pressure to do more to stand out is higher than ever for job seekers. And the members of our NoCode Techies community are not immune. Here are a few tips I have seen work for others and myself. 💡 Communities: most people who know me know that I have never gotten a tech job through going through a company’s career page. Every job I have ever had in the tech space has either come through a recommendation from a friend or through professional communities on Slack or elsewhere. In a world where opportunities are growing scarce, there’s a higher need to put yourself where opportunity resides, and communities are really where it’s at. 💡 Outreach: Over the past few months, I have seen many hiring managers talk about how much they appreciated candidates who reached out to them in some unique way. Some have commended candidates for sending a video intro and others have talked about how it made it easier for them to sort through CVs when the candidate had made some kind of contact on LinkedIn. So, put yourself out there, it might just make the difference. 💡 Referrals: Keeping good relationships with older colleagues is another sure way to set yourself apart in this market. Even in this market, there are people who have only moved from job to job after being laid off, because someone recommended them for another role. And this could be you too.
