A home is a delicate balance between privacy and connection. For their Indiana Street House, the graduate students in the STUDIO 804 INC architecture program wanted to create a visual connection across the length of the home while still offering privacy to its occupants. They designed these perforated sliding screens as the solution. Machined from Richlite, the screens offer layers of privacy while letting light and air move through the house. Richlite is dense and consistent—without pockets or voids—making it ideally machinable. Its strength and consistency means it can take intricate designs without chipping. Plus it requires no sealing, and virtually zero maintenance. The result is a unique and inviting system that will serve its residents for years to come. (Photos by Corey Gaffer)

Louis Kahn’s quote, "The Sun does not realize how wonderful it is until after a room is made," captures the profound connection between architecture and light, and how space shapes our experience of nature. Kahn sir suggests that sunlight, in its purest form, may go unnoticed. But when it enters a room—framed by walls, doors, and windows—it becomes something more meaningful, shaping shadows, illuminating textures, and bringing a sense of warmth and liveliness to the space. The room acts as a canvas that reveals the sun’s potential, making the light tangible and purposeful. In architecture, this interplay between light and space transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, creating an experience that is not only visual but also emotional. In essence, Kahn is saying that the art of architecture lies in crafting spaces that allow natural elements, like sunlight, to express themselves fully. The room becomes a medium through which we can truly "see" and appreciate the beauty of light, and by extension, the beauty of life itself.

Venice teaches us something powerful about architecture—how facades are not just fronts of buildings but vital threads in the urban fabric that define a city’s character. In Venice, facades serve as the public face of private life, weaving together different structures into a cohesive whole. The Venetian approach creates a unique balance where each building, no matter how modest, adds to a harmonious cityscape. Rather than stand-alone designs, Venetian facades connect, defining spaces and reinforcing unity along the Grand Canal, within quiet campos, and throughout the city’s narrow streets. It’s a principle that goes beyond decoration; it’s about architecture actively shaping the public realm. In contrast, many modern cities are filled with isolated structures designed as individual statements, often prioritizing visual impact over urban cohesion. But what if our cities could embrace the Venetian lesson? What if architecture, rather than competing for attention, worked to bring spaces and communities together, enhancing urban life? Imagine a world where modern facades contribute to a seamless experience, where walking through a city feels like traveling through interconnected spaces that each tell a part of a larger story. Venice’s facades offer a timeless blueprint for blending the public and private, the monumental and the humble—all in service of a city that feels whole. As we rethink urban spaces today, perhaps it’s time to look to the past and rediscover the art of building cities with harmony, purpose, and connection.
