𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿𝘀: 𝗔 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲™ In my years of designing Forever Homes™, I've seen many trends come and go, but one element consistently stands out for its sustainability and timeless beauty: timber floors. Here's why choosing timber is a smart, eco-conscious decision for your dream home: 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Timber floors have an incredible lifespan, often lasting generations. They can be sanded back and refinished multiple times, depending on the thickness of timber boards. This longevity makes them a sustainable choice, reducing the need for replacement and minimising waste. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗲: Opting for reclaimed, recycled, or renewable timber not only adds character to your home but also lessens the demand on our forests. It’s also about choosing products that are built to last and Well-crafted timber floors endure the test of time. Buying quality, well designed products, that will stand the test of time are all part of the sustainable story. Products that are cheap to produce end up holding minimal value, and are therefore thrown out, which doesn’t make for a great sustainable story. Here's how people achieve this: 🌸Perspective: Let's shift the focus from putting away broken glass as trash and move towards seeing it for the value it is worth. In this case, this shift in thinking extends their search for beauty and usability to damaged items that other people would throw away. 🌸Recycling: People discover new practices to reuse or recycle things. For broken glass, they may try to put together some of its pieces, melt it to form new objects, or utilize it in creating mosaics. 🌸Upcycling: Creativity is great, but many people also consider the factor of waste and how to mitigate it. Coming up with designs for upcycled glass vases prevents waste and increases the level of sustainable design in society. 🌸Creativity: In this case, creativity means coming up with solutions to challenges. Accepting that something is spoiled is less helpful than accepting that something is’s need to be fixed or remade in a new way. 🌸Optimism and Patience: Positive attitudes help like in this case. 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 One of the most exciting aspects of being a designer is discovering materials that challenge conventional thinking about spaces. Whether through trade shows, blogs, or serendipitous finds, encountering something new sparks creativity and keeps the work dynamic and fresh. However, I’ve been grappling with some guilt: the temporary nature of much of my work often contributes to waste. This has prompted me to reflect on the life cycle of the materials I use, drawing me toward exploring recycled and waste-based options. Here are a few that have recently captured my imagination: Ocean by Smile Plastics: Made from 100% recycled waste packaging, this material combines striking aesthetics with environmental responsibility, helping to keep plastic out of the oceans. Paper Waste Panels by Front (formerly Stone Cycling): These panels transform fully recyclable, non-toxic boards made from otherwise unusable fibres into beautiful wall cladding. Durat Plus by Durat: A fully recyclable solid surface composed of recycled plastic, offering versatility for both indoor and outdoor applications. These materials not only address practical challenges but also inspire us to rethink how design can have a more positive, sustainable impact.
