The theme of NAIDOC Week 2024 is ‘Keep the Fire Burning. Blak, Loud and Proud,’ honouring the enduring strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and cultures. Our nation is enriched by amplifying Indigenous voices, engaging with traditions, and telling their stories. NIDA seeks to educate and inspire our community as we nurture the next generation of creative storytellers.
"First Nations people understand that fire can burn in different ways: cool or hot. When we express ourselves proudly, we ensure our voices are heard. If we suppress our expressions, anger can build up like the fuel loads on unmanaged country, leading to a destructive, hot fire. A hot fire, like unchecked anger, can be blind to its surroundings, unwittingly destroying everything in its path and hindering future growth. On the other hand, a cool fire burns gently, sees where it’s going and is welcomed by its surroundings. It cleanses and clears obstacles, nurturing an environment where future generations can thrive. By creating pathways for First Nations people to express our stories on the stage, screen and behind the scenes, we can be the fire that burns cool and positively influence our communities.” Director, First Nations and Outreach, Travis Cardona.
